Sourcing steel butt-weld fittings from China

Steel butt-weld pipe fittings from China carry 0% UK duty across the supplied lines, with no recorded anti-dumping duty. Pressure-equipment rules depend on the intended use and classification; specify material, wall thickness and weld ends before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources steel butt-weld pipe fittings.

Duty and classification for butt-weld fittings

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 7307 covers iron or steel tube and pipe fittings. This guide concerns butt-weld elbows, bends and other butt-weld fittings. Stainless steel has separate branches. The non-stainless branches distinguish greatest external diameter not exceeding 609,6 mm from diameter exceeding that figure.

All supplied butt-weld lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, steel trade measure, suspension or attached import control on these lines. Import VAT is separate. See UK import duty and VAT and confirm the commodity code using material, fitting shape, dimensions and consignment route.

Confirm with HMRC or your customs broker whether heading 7307 fittings fall within the UK carbon border adjustment mechanism and when any obligations apply. Ask suppliers for emissions data and review the UK carbon border adjustment guide before future shipments. For another product family within the heading, see forged steel pipe flanges.

Specify the steel, geometry and weld ends

Give the factory a drawing for each elbow, bend, tee, reducer or cap. State material grade, seamless or welded construction, outside diameter, wall thickness, centre-to-end dimensions, bend radius and weld-end preparation. For reducers, identify concentric or eccentric geometry and the required orientation. Agree dimensional tolerances, surface condition and batch documentation before accepting the quotation.

State the service fluid, operating pressure and temperature. Great Britain’s pressure-equipment rules cover design, manufacture and conformity assessment of pressure equipment and assemblies above 0.5 bar maximum allowable pressure. Check how the supplied product will be classified for its intended use before agreeing compliance documents. A material certificate alone does not establish suitability for the intended service.

Ask for material certificates linked to the heat markings on the fittings. Agree any chemical, mechanical, weld or surface testing with the project engineer. Specify protection for bevelled ends and moisture-resistant packing so that inspection can distinguish manufacturing defects from transit damage.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 10 tonnes of steel butt-weld elbows and bends; illustrative order only under 7307 93 11 99, invoiced at £18,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £20,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £20,000, so it is £4,000. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Dimensions: measure outside diameter, wall thickness at accessible locations, centre-to-end dimensions and elbow or reducer geometry against the approved drawing.

Weld ends: check bevel angle, root face, end squareness and ovality against the order; look for dents, burrs and damage that obstruct alignment.

Material records: match grade and heat markings to the batch certificates; investigate mixed markings or certificates that describe a different product.

Condition and testing: inspect for cracks, corrosion and weld defects; review the agreed test results and packing condition. Arrange quality inspection before shipment and repeat arrival checks before releasing stock.

What goes wrong

A fitting can have the ordered nominal size yet fail to match the pipe because its actual outside diameter, wall thickness or weld-end preparation differs. Elbows with incorrect centre-to-end dimensions disrupt installation, while eccentric reducers with the wrong orientation change the intended layout. Resolve these details on drawings rather than relying on catalogue names.

Material substitution, missing heat traceability, local thinning and damaged bevels can remain hidden in a mixed shipment. Separate affected batches, compare the fittings with the agreed specification and obtain an engineering decision before accepting repairs or use. Keep photographs, measurements and certificate discrepancies together when requesting corrective action.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on steel butt-weld pipe fittings from China?

The supplied tariff record shows 0% duty on all butt-weld lines, with no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Import VAT is separate.

What should I put on a butt-weld fitting order?

State material grade, construction, actual diameter, wall thickness, fitting geometry, weld-end preparation and service conditions. Attach drawings and agree certificates and tests.

Do steel butt-weld fittings need pressure-equipment checks?

Check the intended use and product classification. The pressure-equipment rules cover equipment and assemblies above 0.5 bar maximum allowable pressure; agree the applicable compliance route before ordering.

How do I check the material certificates?

Match the grade and heat references on each batch to its certificates. Check that the documents describe the delivered fittings and the tests agreed in the order.
