Sourcing steel pipe reducing bushes from China

Steel pipe reducing bushes from China carry 0% UK duty across the relevant lines checked, with no listed anti-dumping duty. Specify the internal and external threads, material and pressure rating; bushes for drinking-water installations must meet the applicable Water Fittings Regulations. Zero duty on the relevant reducing-bush lines

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the relevant lines under heading 7307 carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied snapshot lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or import control on these lines, and does not flag the steel trade measure. Import VAT is normally 20%; see UK import duty and VAT.

Heading 7307 covers iron or steel tube and pipe fittings. For reducing bushes, distinguish cast steel from other steel, stainless from other grades, and threaded from unthreaded construction. The table gives candidate tariff descriptions, rather than a confirmed classification for every bush. Confirm the commodity code using the drawing, material and manufacturing method. See the wider pipe fittings guide for other fitting types.

For forward orders, confirm the UK carbon border adjustment mechanism's commencement date and applicability with HMRC or your customs broker. Ask the factory for steel emissions data and check the UK carbon border adjustment guide for product scope and registration conditions to confirm.

Specify the bore, outer thread and seating shoulder

A threaded reducing bush has a smaller internal connection inside a larger external connection. Specify each thread separately: nominal size, thread standard, parallel or tapered form, engagement length and sealing method. Include the bore, overall length, shoulder dimensions and spanner flats on the drawing. Approve a sample using the actual mating fittings.

State the steel grade, manufacturing method, finish, working fluid and pressure and temperature rating. Ask for batch material certificates and an agreed sample pressure test. For drinking-water installations supplied by a water undertaker, confirm the applicable Water Fittings Regulations quality and standards requirements with that undertaker; confirm the exact model and any third-party approval your merchant requires.

For pressure service, check the regulatory scope before agreeing conformity documents. The Pressure Equipment (Safety) Regulations cover pressure equipment and assemblies with maximum allowable pressure above 0.5 bar. Give the supplier the intended application so that the specification and supporting evidence match the use.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 10 pallets of threaded steel reducing bushes for a pipework merchant, illustrative only under 7307 99 10 90, invoiced at £18,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £20,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £20,000, so it is £4,000. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Threads: gauge the internal and external threads separately against the specified standard, then check engagement with approved mating fittings. Repeat the checks after coating.

Dimensions: measure the bore, body length, shoulder and spanner flats against the drawing. Check that machining leaves sufficient material between the internal and external threads.

Material and finish: match batch identification to material certificates. Inspect for cracks, rust, burrs and machining debris; measure galvanising thickness where specified.

Leak tightness and packing: carry out the agreed sample pressure test. Check size labels, separated variants and protection for exposed threads. Set the sampling brief through the inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A bush can start screwing into a fitting despite having the wrong thread form, then bind or leak. Check both connections with the specified gauges rather than relying on a hand assembly. Excess coating can obstruct threads; poor machining can leave burrs inside the bore or damage the seating shoulder.

Mixed sizes in a carton create installation errors, while an unsupported catalogue pressure rating can conceal unsuitable material or dimensions. Keep an approved drawing and sample, require batch-linked certificates, and quarantine arrivals that fail the agreed checks before releasing them for installation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on steel reducing bushes from China?

The relevant lines in the supplied tariff snapshot carry 0% duty, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm the exact code by material and construction. Import VAT is normally 20%.

Which commodity code applies to threaded steel reducing bushes?

Candidate lines include 7307 99 10 90 for other threaded steel fittings and 7307 29 10 90 for threaded stainless fittings. Cast steel has a separate description. Confirm against the drawing and manufacturing method.

Can steel reducing bushes be used for drinking water?

Specify that use before ordering. Confirm applicable Water Fittings Regulations requirements with the relevant water undertaker. Check the exact model, material and supporting evidence, plus any third-party approval your merchant requires.

How do I check reducing-bush threads before shipment?

Gauge the internal and external threads separately to the specified standard, including after coating. Check engagement with approved mating fittings and run the agreed sample pressure test.
