Sourcing steel pipe repair couplings from China

Steel pipe repair couplings from China carry 0% UK duty on the listed heading 7307 lines. Specify actual pipe outside diameter, seal material and tested pressure rating; for drinking-water fittings, confirm the applicable requirements with the relevant water authority. Cambridge China Bridge sources steel pipe repair couplings.

UK duty on steel pipe repair couplings

Heading 7307 covers iron or steel tube and pipe fittings, including couplings and sleeves. The table gives possible classifications for steel repair fittings, rather than a universal repair-coupling code. Separate cast steel bodies, stainless steel assemblies and threaded sleeves when preparing the product description.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, the supplied lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension, steel trade measure or import control is listed. For forward orders, plan for the UK carbon border adjustment mechanism on iron and steel imports from 1 January 2027 and request supplier emissions data.

Confirm the commodity code using the assembly drawing, body material, manufacturing method, thread arrangement and dimensions. A coupling for repairing a plain pipe needs a different specification from a grooved joint. For the wider coupling family, see grooved steel pipe couplings.

Pipe fit, sealing coverage and pressure duty

Specify whether the product joins pipe ends or seals a damaged section. Record actual pipe outside diameter and its variation, pipe material, surface condition, damage length, sleeve coverage and available installation space. State whether axial restraint is needed. Ask for drawings showing the seal arrangement, body thickness, bolt positions and tightening sequence.

Agree body and fastener grades, coating, gasket compound, conveyed fluid, operating temperature and pressure, and the sample leak-test procedure. For drinking-water fittings, confirm the applicable quality, standard and suitability requirements with the relevant water authority. Obtain evidence for the exact coupling and gasket combination, rather than accepting approval for a different model.

For pressure applications, check whether the assembly falls within the Pressure Equipment (Safety) Regulations before agreeing its compliance documents. These regulate the design, manufacture and conformity assessment of pressure equipment and assemblies with maximum allowable pressure greater than 0.5 bar. Ask the supplier to explain the classification of the proposed product.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 10 tonnes of assorted unthreaded stainless steel repair couplings under 7307 29 80 90, invoiced at £18,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £20,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £20,000, so it is £4,000. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit and coverage: measure the sleeve and sealing range against the drawing, then trial-fit samples on representative pipe. Check that the seal covers the intended damaged area without bolts or lugs obstructing installation.

Seals and fasteners: compare gasket identity and dimensions with the approved sample. Check for cuts, distorted sealing ribs, missing washers, damaged threads and bolts that bind during tightening.

Leak performance: test assembled samples using the agreed pipe condition, tightening procedure and pressure. Record leakage and movement, and check that test reports identify the inspected model and batch.

Material and packing: match material certificates to batch identification, check welds and coating against the order, and inspect arrival packing for corrosion, bent shells and crushed seals. Use quality inspection to organise these checks.

What goes wrong

A nominal pipe size can conceal an outside diameter that falls beyond the gasket's sealing range. A sleeve may cover the hole but leave too little sealing contact on sound pipe. Uneven bolt tightening can distort the shell or displace the gasket. A seal selected without the fluid and temperature information can be unsuitable for the application.

A sealing repair coupling should not be assumed to restrain separated pipe ends. Put the required restraint function in the order and test the proposed arrangement. Resolve drawing changes, gasket substitutions and reports for different models before shipment; an arrival check cannot establish performance that was never demonstrated.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on steel pipe repair couplings from China?

The supplied heading 7307 lines carry 0% duty from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension, steel trade measure or import control. Confirm the exact code for the assembly.

What measurements does the factory need for a repair coupling?

Actual pipe outside diameter and variation, damage length, required sealing coverage and installation clearance. Also state pipe material, fluid, temperature, pressure and whether axial restraint is needed.

Can I use a repair coupling on drinking-water pipe?

Confirm the applicable water fittings requirements with the relevant water authority. Check suitability and supporting evidence for the exact coupling and gasket combination; merchants may also request third-party approval.

Does a repair coupling stop pipe ends pulling apart?

Do not assume it does. Specify whether the coupling must provide axial restraint or only seal a damaged section, and ask for performance evidence for the proposed arrangement.
