Sourcing steam autoclaves from China
Steam steriliser autoclaves and their dedicated parts from China carry 0% UK duty on the listed lines. For Great Britain, establish the applicable pressure-equipment conformity requirements before purchase; medical-device models also need registration before sale. Cambridge China Bridge sources steam steriliser autoclaves.

UK duty on steam steriliser autoclaves
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 16 October 2026, medical, surgical or laboratory sterilisers under 8419 20 00 00 and their dedicated parts under 8419 90 15 00 carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control for either line.
Heading 8419 covers non-domestic equipment that treats materials through temperature change, including sterilisation. The table separates autoclave configurations sharing the steriliser code, rather than suggesting different tariff rates. Confirm the intended function and any separately imported parts using the commodity code guide. For the wider equipment category, see university laboratory equipment. For water bath purchasing, see our laboratory water bath sourcing guide.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bench-top steam autoclaves for laboratory sterilisation | 8419 20 00 00 | 0% | None |
| Parts identifiable as parts of medical, surgical or laboratory sterilisers | 8419 90 15 00 | 0% | None |
Specify the load, chamber and pressure system
State whether the autoclave will process laboratory liquids, glassware, waste or medical instruments. Specify usable chamber dimensions, loading baskets, door arrangement, air removal, drying, cycle records and the expected load. Agree acceptance tests using representative loads, not an empty chamber demonstration.
For Great Britain, pressure equipment above 0.5 bar maximum allowable pressure falls within the pressure-equipment rules, subject to exclusions. Ask the supplier to establish the applicable category and conformity route for the complete assembly. Importers must check that relevant conformity assessment has been carried out and that technical documentation, required documents and applicable markings are present.
For a model supplied as a medical device, registration with the medicines and healthcare products regulator is required before placement on the Great Britain market. Manufacturers outside the UK must appoint a UK responsible person. Confirm the model's regulatory status before ordering. Agree electrical supply, water quality, drainage, steam supply and maintenance access with the installation team.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 2 laboratory steam autoclaves; values are illustrative, not a quote under 8419 20 00 00, invoiced at £16,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £18,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £18,000, so it is £3,600. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity and documents: match the delivered model and serial identification to the order, declaration and test records. Where pressure-equipment rules apply, the importer must ensure that English instructions accompany the equipment.
Door and pressure safety: have a competent inspector check the locking arrangement, pressure indication, protective devices and controlled depressurisation against the agreed specification. Do not attempt an unsafe opening test.
Loaded cycles: witness the agreed cycles with representative loads and retain temperature, pressure and cycle records. Check air removal, liquid handling, drying and alarms for the intended application.
Arrival and spares: inspect the chamber, door seal, pipe connections and control panel for transport damage. Reconcile baskets, hoses, seals and service parts against the packing list. Arrange quality inspection before shipment.

What goes wrong
An empty-chamber test can conceal poor performance with the buyer's actual load. Wet packs, incomplete air removal, unsuitable liquid cycles, leaking seals and missing cycle records are reasons to investigate before acceptance. A chamber that fits the load may still have unsuitable loading access, drainage or electrical requirements.
Supplier paperwork can describe a different model or omit the assembled pressure system. A conformity mark does not replace the workplace examination arrangements: before qualifying pressure equipment is used, a written scheme of examination must be in place and an examination undertaken. Confirm these arrangements with the site before delivery.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on steam autoclaves from China?
The supplied tariff record shows 0% for medical, surgical or laboratory sterilisers under 8419 20 00 00 and dedicated parts under 8419 90 15 00, with no listed trade remedy or attached import control.
Can I use a laboratory autoclave for medical instruments?
Do not assume interchangeability. Confirm the manufacturer's intended use, load capability and regulatory status. A model supplied as a medical device needs registration before placement on the Great Britain market.
What should an autoclave factory test include?
Agree representative loads, cycle records, air removal, drying where needed, alarms and door safety checks. An empty-chamber demonstration alone does not show performance with your intended load.
Does a new autoclave need examination before use?
For qualifying pressure equipment used at work, a written scheme of examination must be in place and an examination undertaken before use. Confirm applicability and arrangements with the site's competent person.
