UK duty on dry heat sterilisers

Heading 8419 covers non-domestic equipment treating materials through temperature change, including sterilising. Medical, surgical or laboratory sterilisers fall under 8419 20 00 00; their parts have a separate line. The table shows product variants sharing the same code, rather than separate tariff classifications.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, the listed steriliser and steriliser-parts lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied data lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls for these lines.

Confirm the commodity code against the actual function and intended use. Do not classify a drying oven as a steriliser simply because the supplier uses that name. For steam equipment within the wider heading, see steam sterilisers and autoclaves.

Specify the load and the sterilisation claim

Describe the materials and articles to be treated, their arrangement on shelves and whether they are packaged. Specify usable chamber space, shelf loading, temperature control, air circulation, cycle recording and over-temperature protection. Ask for loaded-chamber temperature mapping and evidence supporting the claimed sterilisation cycle for your intended load.

Establish whether the model has a medical purpose before ordering. Confirm with MHRA whether a steriliser for medical equipment falls within the medical-device or accessory rules. Medical devices must be registered with MHRA before placement on the Great Britain market, and manufacturers outside the UK must appoint a UK Responsible Person. Manufacturers must also meet the relevant medical-device marking and conformity assessment requirements.

For equipment within the electrical safety rules, the importer must ensure that instructions accompany it in easily understandable English. Agree the electrical supply, installation details, service access and replacement heaters, sensors and door components. Use testing and certification support to identify the evidence needed for the specified model.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of a compact laboratory dry heat steriliser under 8419 20 00 00, invoiced at £300 free on board, with £100 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £400. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £400, so it is £80. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Chamber: check shelf spacing, usable capacity, door alignment, insulation and transit damage against the approved sample.

Cycle: witness operation with the agreed load and compare independent temperature records with the controller display, including heat-up and holding stages.

Protection: check the agreed over-temperature cut-out, alarms and response to interrupted power through a controlled test.

Documents: match the model and serial identification to the supplied records, instructions and approved configuration; check that replacement-part references match the fitted components.

What goes wrong

An empty-chamber demonstration can conceal cold areas around a dense load. A timer that starts before the load reaches the agreed condition can make the displayed cycle misleading. Agree acceptance criteria for the loaded test and keep its records with the delivered machine.

A cabinet sold as a steriliser may arrive with evidence only for heating or drying. Changed sensors, controllers or shelf layouts can also make sample results unrepresentative of production. Check the evidence for the exact configuration before accepting the shipment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on dry heat sterilisers from China?

The supplied tariff data shows 0% for medical, surgical or laboratory sterilisers under 8419 20 00 00 and their parts under 8419 90 15 00, with no listed trade remedies.

Can I sell a dry heat steriliser for medical use in Great Britain?

Check its medical-device status and conformity route. Medical devices require MHRA registration before market placement; manufacturers outside the UK must appoint a UK Responsible Person.

Is a factory temperature display enough to check sterilisation?

Ask for independent temperature records with the intended load and evidence supporting the claimed sterilisation cycle. A display reading alone does not establish performance throughout the load.

What should I specify before asking a factory for a quotation?

State intended use, load materials and arrangement, usable chamber space, electrical supply, cycle controls, recording, protection features and the evidence you expect with the exact model.
