Sourcing rotary evaporators from China
The selected heading 8419 lines for rotary evaporators and related assemblies carry 0% UK duty from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty recorded. Machinery must be safe before it enters the Great Britain market or service; confirm classification and the solvent specification before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources rotary evaporators.

UK duty and classification
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 8419 covers non-domestic equipment treating materials through temperature changes, including distilling and evaporating. The table gives candidate lines for rotary evaporators, separately supplied heat-exchange units and qualifying machinery parts. It does not establish the classification of a particular model.
All selected lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions for these lines. It attaches an import control of fluorinated greenhouse gases to 8419 89 98 00. Imported F-gas equipment must be labelled correctly. For a refrigerated configuration, obtain the refrigerant details and ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable control and declaration requirements.
Confirm the commodity code using the equipment's function, configuration and separately shipped components. Do not assume that a pump, chiller or replacement glass flask shares the evaporator's code. For the wider heading, see freeze dryers.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Distilling plant: candidate line for complete rotary evaporators | 8419 40 00 00 | 0% | None |
| Other temperature-treatment equipment: alternative subject to classification | 8419 89 98 00 | 0% | None |
| Other heat-exchange units, when supplied and classified separately | 8419 50 80 90 | 0% | None |
| Other machinery parts, where classified as parts of this heading | 8419 90 85 90 | 0% | None |
Specify the solvent path and complete system
Name the solvents and intended process, flask capacity and working fill, bath medium and temperature range, rotation range, lift mechanism and condenser arrangement. Identify the glass material, joint sizes and wetted seal materials. Ask the supplier to explain compatibility with your solvent mixture rather than accepting a general claim of chemical resistance.
Define the package boundary: evaporator, vacuum pump, controller, coolant supply, hoses, adapters and receiving flask. Agree a vacuum test method and an evaporation trial with recorded bath conditions, coolant conditions and solvent recovery. Specify the UK electrical supply and connection, bench clearance and replacement seal and glassware availability.
Machinery must be safe before being placed on the Great Britain market or put into service. Confirm the language requirements for instructions and safety information with the relevant authority. Request the model-specific declaration, supporting test documents and operating manual for review through testing and certification.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order only: two rotary evaporators, subject to confirmed classification under 8419 40 00 00, invoiced at £16,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £18,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £18,000, so it is £3,600. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Glassware: inspect unpacked flasks, condenser and joints for cracks, chips, poor fit and transport damage; check every adapter against the packing list.
Vacuum: test the assembled solvent path using the agreed method, record leakage and check seals, hose connections and controlled vacuum release.
Operation: check smooth rotation, flask clearance, lift travel, bath temperature against an independent probe and the agreed overtemperature protection.
Documents and arrival: match model identities across the equipment and documents, check English instructions and repeat the agreed functional checks after delivery. Arrange quality inspection before shipment.

What goes wrong
A pump's advertised vacuum does not establish performance at the flask. Leaking rotary seals, unsuitable hoses and mismatched joints can undermine the assembled system. Insufficient condenser cooling can reduce solvent recovery. Test the complete configuration under agreed conditions rather than accepting an unloaded motor demonstration.
Glassware can arrive chipped despite an intact outer crate, and replacement joints may not fit the original set. Agree individual glass protection and a replacement-parts list. If flammable solvents are intended, ask specifically about the proposed installation and equipment suitability; a general laboratory description does not answer that question.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on rotary evaporators from China?
The selected heading 8419 lines carry 0% duty from China in the supplied tariff record, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm the complete machine's classification before declaring it.
Does a rotary evaporator include the pump and chiller?
Do not assume so. List the pump, vacuum controller, coolant supply, hoses, adapters and receiving flask in the agreed package, and test them together.
What should I check when a rotary evaporator arrives?
Inspect unpacked glassware and joints, check the packing list and model documents, then repeat the agreed vacuum, rotation, lift and bath-temperature checks before acceptance.
Can I use any rotary evaporator with flammable solvents?
Do not choose by flask size alone. Give the supplier your solvents and installation details, and obtain a specific suitability assessment covering the evaporator and its accessories.
