Sourcing static eliminator bars from China

Static eliminator bars provisionally classified as other apparatus carry 2% UK duty from China; qualifying dedicated parts carry 0%. Confirm the classification and applicable electrical safety and electromagnetic compatibility requirements before supply in Great Britain. Cambridge China Bridge sources static eliminator bars.

Duty on static eliminator bars and parts

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 8 October 2026, heading 8543 covers electrical machines and apparatus with individual functions not specified elsewhere in the chapter. The candidate other-apparatus line is 8543 70 90 99 at 2%; other parts under 8543 90 90 00 carry 0%. The table shows configurations against these general lines, rather than separate tariff categories. Confirm each classification from the complete specification.

Neither candidate line lists anti-dumping or countervailing duty. The other-apparatus line has a product-specific suspension at 0%, whose supplied description does not identify static eliminator bars. Do not assume eligibility. The UK Trade Tariff attaches a torture-goods import prohibition and fluorinated-greenhouse-gas import control to that line, plus torture-goods export restrictions to both lines. Confirm the relevant requirements with your customs broker using the actual product specification.

Send the broker the operating principle, power arrangement, intended use and details of separately shipped parts. Use finding your commodity code before ordering. For the wider heading, see sourcing electronics.

Specify the bar, power supply and working distance

Specify active length separately from overall length, mounting positions, working distance, material travel speed and the charge-decay and ion-balance results you need. State whether the bar uses an external high-voltage supply or integrated electronics. Agree cable length, connector type, earthing arrangement, cleaning access and any compressed-air connection. Test a sample on the intended film, sheet or conveyor setup.

For equipment within the voltage scope of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations, check technical documentation, the declaration of conformity, CE or UKCA marking and importer identification. English instructions are required. Electromagnetic compatibility rules cover equipment liable to generate electromagnetic disturbance, subject to exceptions. Request reports covering the supplied bar, power supply and cable configuration. Hazardous-substance restrictions cover electrical equipment unless excluded; check whether an industrial-installation exclusion actually applies.

Check electrical-waste producer status before supply: producers must register annually. Keep compliance evidence matched to the ordered model and material list. Agree the evidence needed through testing and certification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 20 static eliminator bars; illustrative order only under 8543 70 90 99, invoiced at £1,500 free on board, with £600 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £2,100. Duty at 2% is £42. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £2,142, so it is £428.40. Import taxes total £470.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £42 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Dimensions: check active length, straightness, mounting centres and connector clearance against the approved drawing.

Performance: measure charge decay and ion balance at the agreed distance and travel speed, using the intended material and supplied power arrangement.

Electrical assembly: have competent personnel check emitter condition, cable insulation, connector security, earthing and fault indication against the approved sample and test plan.

Arrival condition: inspect for bent emitters, cracked insulation, moisture and loose brackets. Match model labels, English instructions and compliance documents to the delivered assembly; use quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A bar can perform on a stationary sample yet leave charge on moving material when the working distance or speed changes. Dirty or damaged emitters, mismatched power supplies and altered cable arrangements can also undermine the agreed performance. Make acceptance depend on the application test, rather than the presence of an indicator light.

Replacing the power supply or connector after sample approval can leave reports covering a different assembly. Record the approved configuration and require changes to be reviewed before shipment. Protect the emitters during packing and agree how replacements will be identified.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on static eliminator bars from China?

The candidate other-apparatus line 8543 70 90 99 carries 2%; qualifying parts under 8543 90 90 00 carry 0%. Neither lists anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm classification before ordering.

Do static eliminator bars need CE or UKCA marking?

Equipment within the electrical safety regulations needs the relevant marking and conformity evidence. CE or UKCA can be used for Great Britain. Check the bar and power supply together, including applicable electromagnetic compatibility rules.

How do I specify a static eliminator bar?

State active length, working distance, material speed, charge-decay target, ion balance, mounting and power arrangement. Include the supplied cable and test a sample on your actual material.

What should I test when static eliminator bars arrive?

Check emitter damage, insulation, mounting and connector fit. Measure charge decay and ion balance with the delivered power supply at the agreed distance and operating speed.
