Sourcing HDMI switches from China
HDMI switches provisionally classified under the residual apparatus line carry 2% UK duty from China; dedicated parts under the other-parts line carry 0%. Electronic apparatus must meet the applicable electromagnetic compatibility requirements before sale in Great Britain. Cambridge China Bridge sources HDMI switches.

Duty on HDMI switches and dedicated parts
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8543 covers electrical apparatus with individual functions not specified elsewhere in the chapter. The residual apparatus line carries 2% duty from China and the other-parts line 0%, with no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty. The table repeats the residual line for different switch configurations; these are not separate tariff categories.
The residual line has a restricted 0% suspension for named products, not a general exemption for video switching. Its supplied suspension text is truncated, so do not assume eligibility. The UK Trade Tariff attaches torture-and-repression import prohibition, fluorinated greenhouse gas import control and torture-and-repression export restriction measures. The parts line also has the export restriction. Ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable requirements and declarations.
Confirm the commodity code from the actual function, circuitry and supplied accessories. Treat the table as candidate classifications rather than a ruling. For the wider heading, see sourcing electronics.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Other apparatus: HDMI switches with manual selection, subject to classification | 8543 70 90 99 | 2% | None |
| Other parts: dedicated HDMI switch parts, subject to classification | 8543 90 90 00 | 0% | None |
Specify the signal path and switching behaviour
Specify input and output ports, signal direction, supported picture formats, refresh rates, audio formats and cable lengths. Define whether selection is manual, automatic or remote-controlled, and what happens when a source sleeps or wakes. Distinguish a switch that selects a source from a splitter that distributes a source. For recording video, see our USB video capture card guide.
Agree trials using your intended displays, computers and media players, including protected content and display-capability negotiation. Specify the power source and any supplied adaptor. Ask for electromagnetic compatibility and restricted-substance documentation matching the exact model, circuit board and adaptor. Great Britain’s electromagnetic compatibility rules set requirements before apparatus reaches the market; use testing and certification to plan the document review.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 5,000 compact HDMI switches; values are illustrative, not a quote under 8543 70 90 99, invoiced at £20,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £21,500. Duty at 2% is £430. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £21,930, so it is £4,386. Import taxes total £4,816; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £430 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Signal: test every port with the agreed source, display, cable and picture format; check for sparkles, black screens and audio dropouts.
Selection: check buttons, remote operation and automatic selection; repeat sleep, wake, cable reconnection and power restoration.
Construction: compare circuit boards and adaptors with the approved sample; inspect socket alignment, connector retention and heating during sustained operation.
Documents and labels: match model references to reports and declarations. Under the hazardous-substance guidance, products must show the importer’s name or trademark and a contactable address on the product or packaging. Record batch checks through quality inspection.

What goes wrong
A switch can pass a basic picture test yet fail with protected content, a different display or the longest agreed cable. Automatic selection can interrupt a presentation when an idle source wakes. Check these cases on production samples rather than accepting a demonstration with the factory’s equipment.
Component or adaptor substitutions can change performance while the enclosure stays identical. Agree approval before substitutions and compare bulk samples with the retained sample. Separately, electrical-equipment producers must register annually under the waste electrical equipment scheme; settle the registration route before supplying your range.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For components and parts, see sourcing for manufacturers.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on HDMI switches from China?
The supplied tariff snapshot gives 2% for residual apparatus under 8543 70 90 99 and 0% for other parts under 8543 90 90 00. Confirm classification; the residual line’s restricted suspension is not a general switch exemption.
How do I check an HDMI switch before ordering?
Trial your intended sources, displays and cables. Check protected content, audio, every port, source wake-up and selection after power restoration. Retain the approved sample for comparison with production.
Can I use the factory’s test reports?
Ask for reports and declarations matching the exact switch, circuit board and supplied adaptor. Compare model identifiers and construction with your sample, and investigate differences before approving production.
Does a switch also work as a splitter?
Do not assume it does. Specify whether you need source selection or simultaneous distribution to displays, and agree a connection diagram and acceptance trial with the factory.
