UK duty on stainless steel utensil holders

Heading 7323 covers iron and steel table, kitchen and other household articles and their parts, alongside steel wool and scourers. Stainless steel utensil holders are candidates for 7323 93 00 90. The table shows holder designs within this commodity line, rather than separate codes for each design.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 20 November 2026, the supplied data records 0% duty for goods from China under this line, with no anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension. It attaches import and export waste controls. Waste shipment controls apply only where the material is waste. For discarded holders or scrap from China, confirm the applicable requirements with your customs broker before shipment.

Confirm the commodity code using the complete holder's materials, construction and intended use, especially for mixed-material designs. For an alternative material and wider sourcing context, see ceramic utensil holders.

Specify the steel, rim and drainage

Specify the stainless steel grade and thickness of the body, base, dividers and tray separately. Agree the surface finish, usable opening, height, footprint and longest utensils to be stored. Identify any coated steel fasteners or concealed base plates. Keep an approved sample showing the rim, seams and finish.

Choose between a solid base and drainage into a removable tray. Agree hole placement, access for cleaning, divider removal and foot attachment. Describe whether the holder stores clean handles or may touch food-covered utensil heads, and ask a testing provider to assess the intended contact conditions.

Assess accessible burrs, sharp rims, detached feet and tipping with tall utensils. Agree checks with your testing and certification provider.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 900 stainless steel utensil holders under 7323 93 00 90, invoiced at £7,500 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £8,400. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £8,400, so it is £1,680. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Materials and finish: compare material evidence and measured thickness with the specification; inspect the body, base and dividers for scratches, dents, rust and inconsistent polishing.

Edges and joints: inspect the rolled rim, perforations, welds and internal seams for burrs, sharp edges, gaps and loose metal fragments.

Drainage and stability: run the agreed water-drainage check, remove and refit the tray, and load representative utensils; check trapped water, rocking, sliding and tipping.

Packing and arrival: inspect protection between nested holders, then unpack delivered stock and repeat fit and stability checks. Set the inspection brief through quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A polished exterior can conceal rough perforations or an unfinished internal seam. A narrow base may tip when tall utensils lean against the rim. Poorly placed drainage holes leave water behind, while a close-fitting tray can be difficult to remove without spilling.

Material substitutions in the base, dividers or fasteners can undermine the agreed corrosion performance. Nested holders can rub during transport or jam together after denting. Retain the approved sample and agree acceptance criteria for materials, edges, drainage, stability and packed-product protection.
