Duty on stainless steel chafing dishes

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 8 October 2026, heading 7323 covers iron or steel table, kitchen and household articles and their parts. For non-electric stainless steel chafing dishes, the relevant candidate is 7323 93 00 90, other stainless steel articles. Its China duty is 0%, with no recorded anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty or suspension. The table shows product variants under this same code.

The tariff attaches import and export waste controls to this line. Waste shipment controls apply only when the material transported is waste. For goods from China described as scrap, rejects or waste, confirm the applicable requirement with your customs broker before shipment; do not assume the tariff entry authorises their movement.

Confirm the assembled product and any separately supplied parts through finding your commodity code. Give the broker photographs, materials and the heating arrangement, particularly if an electric heater is included. See the stainless steel gastronorm tray guide for the wider stainless steel kitchenware category.

Specify the pan, water tray and lid together

This guide covers non-electric chafing dishes supplied without fuel. Specify the stainless steel grade and thickness for the food pan, water tray, lid and frame separately. Agree usable capacity, pan dimensions, rim profile, lid clearance, handle attachment and fuel-holder position. Approve an assembled sample with the replacement pans you intend to use.

Food contact materials must be safe for their intended use. Ask for supporting material and test documentation for the finished food pan, including any coating, with the intended foods, hot holding and cleaning conditions identified. Agree a sample trial for water leakage, lid operation, handle heating and cleaning before approving production.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of rectangular non-electric stainless steel chafing dishes under 7323 93 00 90, invoiced at £7,500 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £8,400. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £8,400, so it is £1,680. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Pan fit: assemble the food pan, water tray and frame; check seating, removal and lid closure against the approved sample.

Water tray: fill and inspect for leaks at seams and corners; check for distortion after the agreed heating trial.

Frame and lid: check stability when filled, handle security, hinge movement, lid stops and accessible sharp edges.

Finish and packing: inspect welds, polishing residue, scratches and dents; check that packed components cannot rub together. Use the agreed checks at quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A replacement pan sits too low or catches on the rim, the water tray leaks, or the lid drops because its hinge does not hold. Thin trays distort during heating, frames rock on the buffet table and loose handles make carrying awkward. Test the complete assembly with water and the intended pans rather than approving separate components.

Polished surfaces can hide rough seams, cleaning residue and poorly finished welds. Tight nesting can dent rims during transport. Keep the approved assembly as the inspection reference, agree protection between metal surfaces and repeat the fit and leak checks when the shipment arrives.
