Sourcing stainless potable tanks from China

Stainless steel potable-water tanks over 300 litres without mechanical or thermal equipment carry 0% UK duty across the relevant liquid-container codes. For storage cisterns serving mains-supplied premises in England and Wales, installation must minimise contamination. Cambridge China Bridge sources stainless steel potable-water tanks.

Zero duty on potable-water tanks

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 7309 covers steel containers over 300 litres without mechanical or thermal equipment. The relevant liquid-container lines carry 0% duty from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension, steel measure or attached import control in the supplied data. Import VAT is normally 20%.

Lined and heat-insulated tanks share 7309 00 30 00, shown separately in the table. Unlined, uninsulated tanks use 7309 00 59 00 up to 100,000 litres or 7309 00 51 00 above that capacity. Confirm the commodity code against the supplied construction and equipment. See the wider steel tank guide for other uses.

Confirm with HMRC or your customs broker whether these lines will fall within the UK carbon border adjustment mechanism and when any obligations will apply. Plan supplier emissions information alongside the purchase specification. The UK carbon border adjustment guide explains the scheme.

UK duty on these lines for goods of Chinese origin (one code per row), read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026.

Specify the complete drinking-water tank

Define usable capacity, atmospheric or pressurised operation, installation location and water source. Specify stainless grade, plate thickness, internal finish, weld treatment and passivation. Include every wetted component: gaskets, sealants, lining, valves and connections. Ask for evidence covering the supplied materials and intended drinking-water use, rather than accepting a general food-grade description.

For storage cisterns serving mains-supplied premises in England and Wales, installation must minimise contamination of stored water. Agree the cover, screened overflow, insulation, cleaning access and inlet and outlet positions with the installer before approving drawings. Defra directs compliance enquiries to the local water company or Water Regs UK.

Confirm with the relevant authority whether the food-contact framework applies to the proposed fixed public or private water supply installation; assess suitability using evidence for the complete installation rather than food-contact paperwork alone. Establish the tank's maximum allowable design pressure before ordering and confirm with the relevant authority whether pressure equipment requirements apply, including any exclusions.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: four unlined, uninsulated 20,000-litre stainless potable-water tanks under 7309 00 59 00, invoiced at £60,000 free on board, with £8,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £68,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £68,000, so it is £13,600. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Materials: match plate certificates to the tank, verify stainless grade and thickness, and identify the supplied seals, sealants and any lining.

Welds and finish: inspect seams and internal crevices, check the agreed weld treatment and passivation, and witness the agreed leak test before shipment.

Water protection: check cover fit, overflow screening, insulation, cleaning access and connection positions against the approved drawing.

Arrival condition: inspect dents, supports, lifting points and transport bracing; check that openings stayed protected and the interior is free of debris. Record defects before installation.

What goes wrong

A stainless shell can arrive with substituted seals or an undocumented lining. Rough welds, trapped polishing residue and inaccessible crevices make cleaning difficult. Poor weld treatment can leave corrosion around seams, while incorrect connection positions can leave stagnant pockets. Put the complete wetted-material list and cleaning access into the purchase specification.

Transport damage can distort the cover or strain welded connections even when the shell looks intact. Compare arrival photographs and leak-test records with the pre-shipment inspection, then resolve damage before commissioning. Use testing and certification support to define the evidence needed for the intended installation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on stainless potable-water tanks from China?

The relevant liquid-container lines in heading 7309 carry 0% duty from China in the supplied tariff data, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. They cover tanks over 300 litres without mechanical or thermal equipment.

Does food-grade stainless steel prove a tank is suitable for drinking water?

Ask for evidence for the complete wetted assembly, including seals and any lining. Confirm with the relevant authority whether the food-contact framework applies to the proposed fixed public or private water supply installation, and what evidence is needed beyond food-contact paperwork.

Who should check the water fittings requirements before installation?

For the England and Wales water fittings guidance, Defra directs compliance enquiries to your local water company or Water Regs UK. Give them the proposed tank specification and installation details.

What should I inspect when the tank arrives?

Check dents, welds, cover fit, protected openings, internal cleanliness, supports and connection positions. Match the supplied materials to the certificates and retain the pre-shipment leak-test records.
