Sourcing fermentation tanks from China

Stainless-steel fermentation vessels from China qualifying under heading 7309 carry 0% UK duty across the relevant liquid-container lines. They must exceed 300 litres and have no fitted mechanical or thermal equipment; food-contact safety also matters. Cambridge China Bridge sources stainless-steel fermentation tanks.

Zero duty on qualifying fermentation vessels

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 7309 covers steel containers exceeding 300 litres without fitted mechanical or thermal equipment. For fermentation liquids, the relevant lines distinguish lined or heat-insulated vessels from other vessels by capacity. The table separates lined and insulated variants sharing the same commodity code.

The relevant liquid-container lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension, steel measure or attached import control recorded in the supplied tariff facts. Elsewhere in this heading, the gas-container line carries an import control of fluorinated greenhouse gases. If that line is proposed, confirm its requirements with your customs broker.

The published background guide places tanks with agitators or heating or cooling jackets in chapter 84 rather than heading 7309. Send drawings and the equipment list to confirm the commodity code. See the wider steel tanks and vats guide. Ask HMRC or your customs broker whether these tank lines fall within the UK carbon border adjustment mechanism and when any obligations apply; see the carbon border adjustment guide.

Specify the fermentation process and tank construction

Specify the fermentation liquid, cleaning chemicals, stainless grade, plate thickness, usable capacity and total capacity. Agree the internal finish, weld treatment and passivation, outlet arrangement, manway access, sampling connection and cleaning access. Have the factory show how liquid drains from the bottom and how seals and valves can be removed for cleaning.

For food or beverage fermentation, confirm the applicable food-contact requirements with the relevant food safety authority, including limits on substance transfer that could endanger health, unacceptably change food composition or impair taste or smell. Ask for material certificates and evidence suited to the intended liquid, contact conditions and cleaning regime, covering seals and any lining as well as the steel.

For Great Britain, vessels with maximum allowable pressure above 0.5 bar generally fall under the Pressure Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016, subject to exclusions. Ask the relevant authority or a pressure-equipment assessment body to confirm the classification and whether conformity assessment and marking or sound engineering practice applies. Agree the pressure design and documentary route before ordering. Where those regulations apply, the importer must ensure the equipment is accompanied by clear, legible and easily understandable English instructions.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative only: four 20,000-litre stainless-steel fermentation vessels, unlined, uninsulated and without mechanical or thermal equipment under 7309 00 59 00, invoiced at £60,000 free on board, with £8,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £68,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £68,000, so it is £13,600. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Materials: match plate certificates to the supplied tank, check stainless grade and measure wall thickness against the approved drawing.

Welds and finish: inspect internal seams for pores, crevices and unfinished areas; check agreed weld treatment and passivation, and witness the specified leak test.

Connections and cleaning: check outlet and sampling positions, manway seals, valve operation, drainage and access to food-contact surfaces.

Arrival condition: photograph dents and damaged supports before unloading; compare connections, loose fittings and documents with the packing list. Use the quality inspection guide to agree the inspection scope.

What goes wrong

A supplier may quote an unequipped vessel but deliver a jacketed or mixed fermenter, changing the classification basis. A pressure-capable tank can also arrive with paperwork for a different design. Freeze the drawing, fitted equipment and design pressure in the order, and match the delivered vessel to that specification.

Rough internal welds, poorly seated seals and an outlet that leaves liquid behind make cleaning difficult. Thin plate, untreated welds and transport dents can undermine acceptance even when the exterior looks satisfactory. Agree rejection criteria and retain inspection photographs and test records before dispatch and on arrival.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on stainless-steel fermentation tanks from China?

The relevant heading 7309 liquid-container lines carry 0% duty from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty recorded. The vessel must exceed 300 litres and have no fitted mechanical or thermal equipment.

Does a cooling-jacketed fermenter fall under heading 7309?

The published reference places tanks fitted with heating or cooling jackets or mixers in chapter 84. Confirm classification using the drawing and equipment list before relying on the tank duty rate.

Do fermentation tanks need CE or UKCA marking?

Above 0.5 bar, pressure equipment rules generally apply in Great Britain, subject to exclusions. Ask the relevant authority or a pressure-equipment assessment body to confirm the classification, documentary route and whether sound engineering practice or conformity marking requirements apply.

What should I check before accepting a fermentation tank?

Check material certificates, wall thickness, internal welds, finish, seals, drainage and connection positions. Match test records to the delivered tank and photograph transit damage before unloading.
