Sourcing stainless channels from China
Stainless steel channel sections from China carry UK tariff rates of 0% to 50%, depending on how they are made and worked. Confirm the manufacturing route before choosing the commodity code; cold-formed channels have the 50% listed rate, with quota treatment requiring a separate check. Cambridge China Bridge sources stainless steel channel sections.

Channel duty depends on the manufacturing route
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 25 October 2026, heading 7222 covers other stainless steel bars and rods, plus angles, shapes and sections. This guide covers channel sections. The supplied snapshot lists 0% for hot-rolled, hot-drawn or extruded channels, channels only further worked by cladding, and other further-worked sections. It lists 50% for channels only cold-formed or cold-finished.
The supplied channel lines list no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or attached import controls. The site's wider guide describes 0% quota treatment for cold-formed sections, with 50% outside quota. The supplied snapshot does not record that quota: ask your customs broker to confirm availability and eligibility before budgeting on relief. See the wider stainless steel guide.
Give your broker the section drawing, manufacturing route and details of any further processing when confirming the commodity code. A supplier's description of a polished surface does not establish the manufacturing route. Consult the wider guide for context and ask HMRC or your customs broker to confirm whether the UK carbon border adjustment mechanism will apply to your stainless steel imports.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stainless channels, only hot-rolled, hot-drawn or extruded | 7222 40 10 00 | 0% | None |
| Stainless channels, only cold-formed or cold-finished | 7222 40 50 00 | 50% | None |
| Hot-rolled, hot-drawn or extruded stainless channels, only further worked by cladding | 7222 40 90 10 | 0% | None |
| Other further-worked stainless channel sections | 7222 40 90 90 | 0% | None |
Specify the channel profile and intended use
Specify the stainless grade, web depth, flange width, web and flange thickness, internal corner radius, length and tolerances. State whether the channel is hot-rolled, bent from sheet or made by welding, and agree straightness, twist, flange squareness and surface finish. Ask the broker to assess welded or fabricated channels separately rather than assuming the same classification.
Ask for a mill inspection certificate matching the heat markings, with chemistry and mechanical results. For construction use in Great Britain, check the applicable product standard and assessment route before ordering. CE marking remains available for construction products; products bearing UKCA must meet UK requirements, with any required third-party assessment carried out by a UK approved body.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative small fabrication batch of hot-rolled stainless channel sections under 7222 40 10 00, invoiced at £3,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £5,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £5,000, so it is £1,000. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Material: compare heat markings with mill certificates and arrange sampled chemistry checks against the ordered grade.
Profile: measure web depth, flange width and thickness along the channel; check corner radius, flange squareness, straightness and twist against the drawing.
Surface: inspect the inside corners and flange edges for cracks, burrs, scratches, embedded contamination and finishing residue.
Packing: check bundle identification, separators and edge protection before loading; repeat dimensional and surface checks on arrival. Use the quality inspection guide to brief the inspector.

What goes wrong
Channels can match the nominal outer size yet have thinner flanges, a different corner radius or enough twist to prevent assembly. Substituting a bent profile for a hot-rolled channel changes the geometry and may change the tariff line. Make the manufacturing route part of the purchase specification and approve a measured sample.
Mixed heats break certificate traceability, while unprotected flange edges arrive dented or scratched. For construction products, importers must not supply goods in Great Britain when they have reason to believe the applicable requirements are unmet. Check the product evidence before release, alongside the physical inspection.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on stainless steel channels from China?
The supplied snapshot lists 0% for hot-rolled and further-worked channel lines and 50% for only cold-formed or cold-finished channels. Ask your broker to check any quota relief separately.
Are hot-rolled and cold-formed stainless channels interchangeable?
Compare thickness distribution, corner radius, flange geometry and mechanical results against your drawing. Agree any substitution before production; the manufacturing route also affects the tariff line.
What paperwork should I request from the channel supplier?
Request a section drawing, manufacturing-route description and mill certificate showing heat number, chemistry and mechanical results. Match these to the bundle markings and your purchase specification.
Do stainless channels for construction need CE or UKCA checks?
Check the applicable standard and assessment route for the intended use. CE remains available for construction products in Great Britain; UKCA products must meet UK requirements.
