Sourcing stainless steel Z-sections from China
Stainless steel Z-sections from China have listed UK duty rates of 0% to 50%. The manufacturing route and further working determine the commodity line, so confirm these against the drawing and mill records before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources stainless steel Z-sections.

Duty depends on how the Z-section is made
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, heading 7222 covers other stainless steel bars and rods, and stainless steel angles, shapes and sections. This guide covers Z-sections within the shapes and sections branch. See the stainless steel channel sections guide for the wider heading.
The supplied snapshot lists 0% for sections only hot-rolled, hot-drawn or extruded, 50% for sections only cold-formed or cold-finished, and 0% for the other section lines shown here. It lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls for these lines. The related published guide discusses quota relief for cold-formed sections; have your broker confirm availability before relying on it.
Ask the factory to describe the forming route and every subsequent operation, including cladding. Give your broker the section drawing and manufacturing records to confirm the commodity code. Do not select a line from the Z-shaped outline alone.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stainless Z-sections, only hot-rolled, hot-drawn or extruded | 7222 40 10 00 | 0% | None |
| Stainless Z-sections, only cold-formed or cold-finished | 7222 40 50 00 | 50% | None |
| Hot-rolled, hot-drawn or extruded stainless Z-sections, only further clad | 7222 40 90 10 | 0% | None |
| Other stainless Z-sections | 7222 40 90 90 | 0% | None |
Specify the web, flanges and bend direction
Provide a dimensioned cross-section showing web depth, flange widths, material thickness, inside bend radii and any return lips. Identify the viewing direction so the factory cannot reverse the flange orientation. Agree tolerances for flange angle, straightness, twist, cut length and hole positions, with a sample fitted to the mating assembly.
Specify the stainless grade, surface finish, forming route and intended exposure. Ask for mill certificates linked to the supplied heat markings, and agree how chemistry will be checked. For construction use, confirm the applicable product standard and conformity route before ordering. Construction products bearing legitimately affixed CE marking can continue to be supplied in Great Britain.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative stock order: 20 tonnes of cold-formed stainless steel Z-sections under 7222 40 50 00, invoiced at £56,000 free on board, with £3,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £59,000. Duty at 50% is £29,500. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £88,500, so it is £17,700. Import taxes total £47,200; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £29,500 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Material: match bundle and heat markings to mill certificates, and check sampled material chemistry against the ordered grade.
Profile: measure web depth, flange widths, thickness, bend radii and flange angles against the approved drawing; check the flange orientation.
Fit: check straightness and twist along the section, then trial-fit cut ends, holes and mating parts.
Finish and packing: inspect bend areas for cracks, edges for burrs and surfaces for scratches or rust staining; check supports and separators prevent flange damage. See our quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong
Springback can leave flange angles outside the drawing, while uneven forming produces twist that prevents assembly. Reversed flange orientation, misplaced holes and crushed bundle ends can make otherwise correct material unusable. Agree a signed drawing and an approved fit sample before production.
A supplier's description may omit cold forming or later processing, leading the buyer to budget against the wrong duty line. Mixed heats and certificates that cannot be matched to bundles also weaken material traceability. Check the production records and inspect the goods before accepting the shipment.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on stainless steel Z-sections from China?
The supplied snapshot lists 0% for only hot-rolled, hot-drawn or extruded sections, 50% for only cold-formed or cold-finished sections, and 0% for other section lines. Confirm the manufacturing route and any quota relief with your broker.
What dimensions should I put on a stainless Z-section drawing?
Show web depth, flange widths, thickness, bend radii, flange orientation and any lips or holes. Agree flange angle, straightness, twist and cut-length tolerances.
How do I check the stainless grade on arrival?
Match heat markings and bundle labels to mill certificates. Arrange chemistry checks on sampled sections against the ordered grade, and keep the results linked to the inspected bundles.
Can CE-marked stainless Z-sections be sold in Great Britain?
For construction products, legitimately affixed CE marking remains accepted in Great Britain. Confirm the applicable product standard and conformity route for the intended use before ordering.
