Sourcing stainless steel square bars from China

Stainless steel square bars from China have listed UK duty rates of 0% to 50%, depending on production route and nickel content. Confirm the code from the mill certificate and processing history, rather than the square shape alone. Cambridge China Bridge sources stainless steel square bars.

Square-bar duty depends on processing and nickel

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, heading 7222 covers other stainless steel bars and rods, together with angles, shapes and sections. This guide covers solid square bars. The relevant lines distinguish hot-rolled, hot-drawn or extruded bars without further working, cold-formed or cold-finished bars, and forged bars, then divide them by nickel content.

For goods from China, the supplied snapshot lists 0% for both hot-worked square-bar lines and forged bars containing less than 2.5% nickel. Both cold-finished lines and forged bars containing 2.5% or more nickel show 50%. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control is recorded for these lines. The snapshot records no separate steel measure; the published reference describes quota relief on certain bars. Confirm any relief with your customs broker before budgeting.

Confirm the commodity code using the mill certificate and processing history. See the stainless steel hexagonal-bar guide for related coverage within the wider heading. The published reference identifies these bars as within the UK carbon border adjustment mechanism from 1 January 2027. Ask the mill for emissions data and check the UK carbon border adjustment guide.

Specify the square section and delivery condition

Specify the steel grade, side dimension measured across flats, dimensional tolerance, corner radius, squareness, straightness and cut length. State whether you want hot-rolled, cold-drawn, ground or polished stock, together with heat treatment and surface finish. For machining, agree the allowance needed to remove surface defects; for exposed fabrication, agree an acceptable finish sample.

Ask for a heat-specific mill inspection certificate showing chemistry, nickel content, mechanical results and delivery condition. Match the heat number to each bundle and retain traceability when bars are cut. Ask for melt and processing origins alongside the certificates: UK authorities may request supply-chain evidence at the border for third-country-processed iron and steel.

If the bars are being sold for construction use, check the applicable product standard and conformity route before ordering. CE marking remains recognised for construction products in Great Britain. Agree the supporting documents for the intended product and use rather than accepting a generic certificate.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative bundled stock order of hot-rolled stainless steel square bars for a fabricator under 7222 19 10 00, invoiced at £18,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £20,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £20,000, so it is £4,000. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Material: compare heat numbers with mill certificates and independently check sampled bars against the ordered chemistry.

Section: measure across flats along each sampled bar, compare diagonals, and check corner radius, squareness, straightness and length against the drawing.

Surface: inspect faces and corners for seams, laps, cracks, deep scratches and grinding marks; compare polished stock with the agreed sample.

Packing: check bundle identification, separators, secure strapping and end protection, then inspect again on arrival for bent bars and damaged corners. Use the quality inspection guide to define acceptance checks.

What goes wrong

A supplier describes hot-rolled stock as bright bar, substitutes a grade, or supplies certificates that do not match the marked heats. Rounded corners or unequal side dimensions can leave insufficient material for machining. Twisted bars and grinding marks may only become obvious when stock is laid out or fabricated.

Treat a change in production route as a reason to recheck classification and duty. Approve the section drawing and finish sample before production, keep disputed bundles separate on arrival, and compare the bars with both the purchase specification and their heat records.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on stainless steel square bars from China?

The snapshot lists 0% for hot-worked bars and forged bars below 2.5% nickel, and 50% for cold-finished bars and forged bars with 2.5% or more nickel. Confirm the exact code and any quota relief with your broker.

Are hot-rolled and cold-drawn square bars classified together?

They use different lines. Confirm the full processing history and nickel content; the square cross-section alone does not identify the commodity code.

What should the mill certificate show?

Ask for the grade, heat number, chemical composition including nickel, mechanical results and delivery condition. Match the certificate to bundle markings and keep that link when cutting the bars.

Do stainless steel square bars need CE marking?

Check the intended use and applicable construction-product route before ordering. CE marking remains recognised for construction products in Great Britain; agree the supporting documents for your product.
