Sourcing stainless I-beams from China
Stainless steel I-beams from China have listed UK duty rates of 0% to 50%. The manufacturing route and further processing decide the section line, so confirm the code from the mill records rather than the beam's name. Check construction documentation for building use. Cambridge China Bridge sources stainless steel I-beams.

Duty depends on how the beam is made
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, heading 7222 covers other stainless steel bars and rods, and angles, shapes and sections. This guide concerns stainless steel I-beams supplied as sections. The table separates manufacturing and processing routes; it does not give interchangeable codes for the same beam.
The supplied tariff snapshot lists 0% for 7222 40 10 00, 7222 40 90 10 and 7222 40 90 90, and 50% for 7222 40 50 00. These lines show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control. No separate steel measure is flagged in the supplied facts. Have your broker check the live tariff before shipment.
Send your broker the section drawing, material certificate and manufacturing description, including welding, cladding and further processing, to confirm the commodity code. For the wider heading, see our stainless channel sections guide.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stainless I-sections, only hot-rolled, hot-drawn or extruded | 7222 40 10 00 | 0% | None |
| Stainless I-sections, only cold-formed or cold-finished | 7222 40 50 00 | 50% | None |
| Hot-rolled, hot-drawn or extruded stainless I-sections, only further clad | 7222 40 90 10 | 0% | None |
| Other stainless I-sections | 7222 40 90 90 | 0% | None |
Specify the flange, web and manufacturing route
Specify the stainless grade, overall depth, flange width, web and flange thickness, length, straightness, twist and dimensional tolerances on an approved drawing. State whether the beam is rolled or assembled by welding, and agree the surface treatment and weld inspection needed. Ask for heat-linked material certificates with chemistry and mechanical test results.
For building projects, ask your compliance adviser to confirm the applicable construction-product standard, performance documentation and marking before ordering. CE marking remains recognised for construction products in Great Britain. Obtain the declaration of performance and supporting assessment documents appropriate to the proposed supply, and have the project engineer review suitability for the intended load and environment.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 20 tonnes of hot-rolled stainless steel I-beams under 7222 40 10 00, invoiced at £56,000 free on board, with £3,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £59,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £59,000, so it is £11,800. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Material: match beam and bundle heat markings to the mill records, and arrange sampled grade verification.
Geometry: measure depth, flange width and thickness, web thickness and length; check flange alignment, straightness and twist against the drawing.
Welds and finish: for welded beams, check the agreed weld profile and test reports; inspect for cracks, distortion, surface damage and treatment residue.
Packing and records: check bundle identification, separation from carbon steel and protection of flange edges. Plan arrival checks using our quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong
An order described only as a stainless I-beam leaves room for a different manufacturing route, thinner flanges or a substituted grade. Weld distortion can prevent fit-up, and material certificates may belong to another heat. Put the drawing, route, tolerances and document list into the purchase specification before approving production.
A quotation can assume the wrong tariff line, while a generic certificate may not support the proposed building use. Confirm classification with the broker and review construction documentation before dispatch. Compare the factory's equipment and records through factory verification.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on stainless steel I-beams from China?
The supplied snapshot lists 0% for hot-worked, clad hot-worked and other section lines, and 50% for the cold-formed or cold-finished line. Confirm the manufacturing route and exact code with your broker.
Are welded stainless I-beams classified like rolled beams?
Do not assume so. Give your broker the drawing and details of welding and further processing before selecting a commodity code.
What dimensions should I specify for a stainless I-beam?
Specify overall depth, flange width, web and flange thickness, length, straightness, twist and tolerances. Agree the manufacturing route and surface treatment.
Can CE-marked stainless beams be sold for construction in Great Britain?
CE marking remains recognised for construction products. Ask your compliance adviser to review the applicable standard, performance documentation and assessment evidence for the specific beam.
