Sourcing stainless rebar from China

Stainless steel reinforcing bars from China have listed UK duty rates of 0% to 50% under heading 7222, depending on their classification. Agree the reinforcement specification and confirm the code before ordering; a general stainless bar certificate alone does not establish suitability. Cambridge China Bridge sources stainless steel reinforcing bars.

Duty depends on the bar's classification

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, heading 7222 covers other stainless steel bars and rods, angles, shapes and sections. This guide focuses on bars for concrete reinforcement. The table gives possible hot-rolled bar classifications; have your broker confirm how the actual rib profile, cross-section, processing and nickel content affect the code.

The supplied snapshot lists 0% for hot-rolled non-circular bars and 50% for hot-rolled round bars. It records no anti-dumping or countervailing measures, suspensions or attached import controls. The wider guide discusses steel quotas, but this snapshot does not record quota relief: ask your broker to verify any relief before budgeting.

Confirm the commodity code using the mill certificate, manufacturing description and cross-section drawing. See the wider stainless steel bars guide for other finishes. Ask HMRC or your customs broker to confirm whether these lines fall within the carbon border adjustment mechanism and when any obligations apply; see the UK carbon border adjustment guide.

UK duty on these lines for goods of Chinese origin (one code per row), read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026.

Specify reinforcement performance and rib geometry

Ask the structural engineer to approve the reinforcement standard and stainless grade for the intended concrete environment. Specify nominal diameter, rib geometry, mass per length, yield strength, tensile strength, elongation, bend performance and any fatigue testing needed. Agree whether bars arrive straight, cut or bent, with the bending schedule and coupler details where applicable.

Request a heat-linked inspection certificate showing chemistry and mechanical test results, plus reports for the agreed reinforcement tests. Specify bundle identification and separation of grades and heats. General stainless bar certificates should be checked against the reinforcement specification rather than accepted solely because the material is stainless.

CE marking remains available for construction products placed on the market in Great Britain. Before accepting a marking claim, ask the supplier which product standard or technical assessment supports it and whether it covers the intended reinforcement use. Arrange a review through testing and certification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 20 tonnes of hot-rolled non-circular stainless reinforcing bars under 7222 19 10 00, invoiced at £56,000 free on board, with £3,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £59,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £59,000, so it is £11,800. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match bundle labels and bar markings to heat numbers, certificates and the purchase specification; sample the material for grade verification.

Geometry: check nominal diameter, mass per length, rib pattern, straightness and cut lengths against the agreed drawings and tolerances.

Performance: check that tensile, elongation and bend reports identify the supplied heats; arrange independent testing where agreed.

Condition: inspect ribs and bends for damage, check for surface contamination from carbon steel handling, and confirm bundles remain identifiable after unloading.

What goes wrong

A supplier delivers ordinary stainless round bar when the project needs ribbed reinforcement, or submits chemistry results without the agreed mechanical and bend tests. Mixed heats, damaged ribs and inaccurate bends can prevent acceptance even when the stainless grade is correct.

Another failure is pricing every bar at the non-circular tariff rate without checking its classification. Approve the specification and sample, verify heat traceability, and confirm the declaration before shipment. Use the quality inspection guide to agree what the inspector records.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on stainless reinforcing bars from China?

The supplied tariff snapshot lists 0% for hot-rolled non-circular stainless bars and 50% for hot-rolled round bars. Classification depends on the actual product; confirm the code and any current relief with your broker.

Can I buy general stainless round bar for concrete reinforcement?

Only order against the structural engineer's approved specification. Check the required surface profile, strength, elongation and bend performance rather than relying on a general stainless grade description.

What certificates should come with stainless rebar?

Request heat-linked chemistry and mechanical results, plus the agreed reinforcement test reports. Match certificates to bundle labels and bar markings, and check that reports cover the supplied material.

Does a CE mark prove the bars meet my project specification?

Check the standard or technical assessment behind the marking and compare its scope and declared performance with the engineer's specification. Also verify the grade, dimensions and heat-linked test results.
