Sourcing stage lighting desks from China

Stage lighting control consoles from China normally pay 2% UK duty; selected separate inputs carry 0%, giving a 0% to 2% range. Confirm the complete console's electrical safety and electromagnetic compatibility documents before selling in Great Britain. Cambridge China Bridge sources stage lighting control consoles.

Duty on stage lighting control consoles

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 8537 covers equipped consoles and panels for electrical control or distribution. For a complete low-voltage lighting desk, investigate 8537 10 98 99 against its construction and function. The other table rows concern separately imported controllers and inputs, not alternative codes for a complete desk. See the wider control panels guide.

The selected lines show 2% duty on Chinese goods, except touch inputs without displays at 0%. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty is recorded. Conditional 0% suspensions for specified control units or authorised manufacturing uses do not generally cover lighting desks. The keyboard line also shows a 0% suspension, excluding products assembled from different components containing those keyboards. Confirm eligibility for separately imported goods.

The selected lines attach fluorinated greenhouse gas import control. Imported F-gas equipment requires correct labelling; ask the supplier whether any gas is present and have your customs broker confirm the requirement for the exact console. The keyboard line also attaches a supplementary-unit measure; confirm quantity reporting with the broker. Confirm your commodity code from the circuitry, voltage and shipment contents. See import duty and VAT when costing the order.

Specify fixture control and show-file compatibility

List the fixtures and operating modes the desk must control. Specify DMX outputs, connector pin assignments, network protocols, output capacity, fader layout, cue storage, blackout behaviour and recovery after power loss. Agree the firmware version, fixture library, show-file import and export, software licences and backup method. Test an approved sample with your actual fixtures and network equipment.

For mains-powered equipment, confirm electrical safety scope; obtain the complete console's technical documentation, declaration of conformity, CE or UKCA marking, importer identification and English instructions. Check electromagnetic compatibility evidence for the supplied configuration, including its power supply. Ask for hazardous-substance compliance evidence: electrical equipment, cables and spare parts fall within RoHS unless specifically excluded. Confirm your electrical equipment producer status; producers must register annually. Arrange testing and certification around the final model.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 20 stage lighting control consoles for an event equipment business under 8537 10 98 99, invoiced at £30,000 free on board, with £1,800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £31,800. Duty at 2% is £636. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £32,436, so it is £6,487.20. Import taxes total £7,123.20; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £636 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Controls: operate every fader, encoder, button and touch area; check smooth response, screen readability and correspondence between labels and software functions.

Playback: load an agreed show file, patch the actual fixture modes and test cue transitions, blackout, simultaneous outputs and recovery after restarting.

Documents: match model identification, power supply, firmware and connector layout to the approved sample, declaration, test reports and English instructions.

Arrival: check for damaged screens, bent sockets, loose fader caps and moisture; repeat playback and backup restoration before assigning the desk to an event. Plan quality inspection before dispatch.

What goes wrong

A fixture can respond to basic dimming while colour, movement or effects behave incorrectly because its operating mode differs from the console's library entry. Agree a fixture-by-fixture acceptance demonstration. Network output claims also need a working demonstration with the intended receiving equipment and agreed settings.

Firmware changes can alter show-file compatibility or playback behaviour. Keep the approved version and a tested backup, and require approval before substitutions to the power supply or control hardware. Packing that presses on faders or leaves sockets exposed can damage a desk that passed its factory test.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on stage lighting consoles from China?

Ordinary complete consoles under 8537 10 98 99 carry 2%. Separate touch inputs without displays carry 0%. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty is recorded for the selected lines; suspensions have conditions.

Does a touchscreen lighting desk qualify for 0% duty?

The 0% line describes touch-sensitive inputs without display capabilities, supplied for incorporation into equipment. It does not describe a complete lighting desk with a screen. Confirm the complete product's code.

Is a CE mark enough for a lighting control console?

Check the declaration of conformity, technical documentation, applicable electrical safety and electromagnetic compatibility evidence, importer identification and English instructions for the exact console and power supply.

What should I test before buying a lighting console?

Use your actual fixtures to test patching, cue playback, blackout, all outputs, faders and encoders. Save and restore a show file, restart the desk and check the agreed firmware and software licences.
