Duty on sheet metal punching tools

Heading 8207 covers interchangeable tools, including tools for pressing, stamping or punching. Ordinary sheet metal punches and punching dies fall within the metalworking branch, commonly 8207 30 10 90. The specialised line 8207 30 10 10 describes transfer or tandem press tool sets for manufacturing motor vehicle frame or body parts. The table separates buying applications that share a commodity code.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, these metalworking punching-tool lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff facts list no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, steel measure or suspension. The specialised automotive tool-set line has a supplementary-unit import entry; the importer should confirm the declaration requirement with their customs broker. No control is listed for the ordinary metalworking line.

Send drawings, the intended operation and details of any complete tool set to your broker to confirm the commodity code. For the machines that carry the tooling, see the press brakes and metal-forming machines guide. For extrusion tooling, see our metal extrusion die sourcing guide.

Specify the punch, die and machine interface

State the machine make, model, tool station, mounting dimensions and orientation. Provide drawings for punch profile, working length, die opening and clearance, tied to the sheet material and thickness. Agree steel grade, heat treatment, finished hardness, coating and regrinding allowance. Request trial holes in your actual sheet material, with the resulting parts and recorded tool settings.

For workplace supply in Great Britain, the supply chain has safety obligations, so far as reasonably practicable, covering use, setting, cleaning and maintenance, including necessary testing and safe-use information. Ordinary punching tools should be distinguished from function-changing attachments: the machinery guidance's definition of interchangeable equipment excludes tools. Assess an attachment separately before deciding its conformity route.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative mixed order of replacement punches and matched dies for a sheet metal workshop under 8207 30 10 90, invoiced at £35,000 free on board, with £2,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £37,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £37,000, so it is £7,400. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: measure shank, locating surfaces, working length and orientation against the approved drawing; check seating in the intended holder.

Material: compare batch certificates with the agreed steel grade and heat treatment; check sample hardness and look for grinding cracks or chipped edges.

Trial holes: punch the agreed sheet material and inspect hole dimensions, burrs, distortion, stripping and slug release against the approved sample.

Identification and packing: match punches to dies, check size and batch identification, and inspect cutting-edge protection and corrosion prevention at inspection.

What goes wrong

A punch can match the nominal hole size yet have the wrong mounting geometry or working length. Incorrect clearance creates heavy burrs or distorted holes; poor alignment chips edges. Unsuitable heat treatment causes early wear or brittle failure, while poor stripping or slug release interrupts production.

Keep an approved drawing and trial sample for each matched tool combination. Record the sheet material and machine settings used for acceptance, and repeat the same trial on shipment samples. Agree how the factory will investigate wear, chipping or dimensional failures before placing repeat orders.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on sheet metal punching tools from China?

The relevant metalworking punching-tool lines carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff facts, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Do sheet metal punches need CE or UKCA marking?

Ordinary tools are excluded from the machinery definition of interchangeable equipment. Assess function-changing attachments separately; workplace supply still carries safety obligations.

What should I send a Chinese punching-tool factory?

Machine make and model, mounting drawings, punch profile, die opening, clearance, sheet material and thickness, steel grade, hardness and an agreed trial-hole sample.

How do I check punch and die quality before shipment?

Measure mounting and cutting dimensions, check material and hardness, and trial matched punches and dies in the agreed sheet. Inspect burrs, distortion, stripping and slug release.
