Duty and classification for boring bars

Heading 8207 covers interchangeable cutting tools, including boring and turning tools. For indexable boring bars, distinguish tools intended for boring from internal turning tools, and identify the working-part material. The table gives candidate lines for those configurations, rather than interchangeable codes for the same bar. For thread milling tools, see our guide to sourcing thread milling cutters.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, all the selected lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff data lists no anti-dumping or countervailing measures, suspensions or import controls for these lines.

Confirm the commodity code using the supplied configuration, cutting material and intended operation. Tell the broker whether inserts are fitted, supplied separately or absent. For the wider heading, see the carbide end mills guide.

Specify the insert seat and working reach

State the shank diameter and tolerance, clamping flats, overall length, minimum bore diameter, cutting hand and permitted overhang. Specify steel or carbide construction, coolant passages and connection details. Give the exact insert designation, seat geometry, screw and clamp arrangement, and say whether inserts and spare screws are included.

Tools sold for workplace use must be safe, so far as reasonably practicable. Ask the factory for fitting instructions, tightening guidance and operating limits for the supplied bar and insert combination. Agree a cutting trial using your workpiece material, bore depth, machine holder and coolant arrangement.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 740 indexable boring bars for metal under 8207 60 30 00, invoiced at £7,548 free on board, with £740 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £8,288. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £8,288, so it is £1,657.60. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Shank and reach: measure diameter, straightness, flats and cutting-edge position against the drawing; check clearance inside the intended bore.

Insert seat: fit the agreed insert, check full seating and clamp engagement, and look for burrs, rocking, damaged threads or mismatched screws.

Cutting trial: compare bore size, taper, surface finish and chatter with the approved sample at the agreed overhang and cutting conditions.

Arrival and packing: check for rust, chipped inserts and damaged seats; match bar markings, spare parts and instructions to the order. Use the inspection guide to brief the inspector.

What goes wrong

A bar can accept the named insert yet support it poorly because the seat angle, screw position or clamp differs. The insert moves under load, leaving chatter marks or an oversized bore. Excessive overhang, an undersized shank or substituted bar material can also cause deflection and taper.

Keep an approved assembly with its insert, screw and clamp as the comparison sample. Check production samples before shipment and repeat the agreed cutting trial on arrival. Resolve substitutions in writing, including changes to coolant passages and replacement screws.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on indexable boring bars from China?

The selected boring and turning tool lines under heading 8207 carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff data, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing measures.

Which commodity code should I use for a boring bar?

Confirm the intended operation, working-part material and supplied configuration with your broker. The table includes boring and internal turning candidates; the product name alone does not settle the code.

Will the bar fit my existing inserts?

Specify the exact insert designation, seat geometry, screw and clamp. Fit your intended insert to a sample and check seating and retention before approving production.

How do I check a boring bar for chatter?

Run a sample in your intended holder and workpiece material at the agreed overhang. Compare vibration, bore taper and surface finish with the approved assembly.
