Sourcing clinching machines from China

Sheet metal clinching machines within heading 8462 carry 0% UK duty from China across the relevant press lines. New machinery sold in Great Britain must have CE or UKCA marking, a declaration of conformity and English instructions. Match the tooling to your sheet stack. Cambridge China Bridge sources sheet metal clinching machines.

Duty and the correct press classification

Heading 8462 covers metal-working machine tools and presses. This guide concerns machines that join sheet metal by locally forming an interlocking joint without a separate rivet. The table lists possible cold metal press classifications, rather than dedicated clinching codes. Confirm the drive mechanism, numerical control and actual working operation through finding your commodity code.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, all the listed lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or attached import controls for these lines. Import VAT is normally 20%; see UK import duty and VAT.

For machines beyond this product family, see press brakes and metal-forming machines. A supplier's description of a machine as a clincher does not establish its commodity code.

Specify the sheet stack and clinching tooling

Give the factory the sheet materials, coatings, thickness combination and stacking order. Send representative parts and drawings showing joint locations, edge clearance, access to the underside and permitted surface marks. Specify punch and die geometry, throat depth, opening, stroke, force adjustment and the fixtures needed to reach each joint.

Agree sample-joint acceptance criteria for sectioned joints, remaining bottom thickness, interlock, cracks and pull-out or shear performance. Ask for trials using your actual sheet stack, including coated material. Confirm electrical supply, compressed-air needs, controller language, tooling replacement and access for maintenance.

New machinery placed on the Great Britain market must be CE or UKCA marked, accompanied by a declaration of conformity and supplied with English instructions. For manually loaded or unloaded cold metal presses whose moving parts can travel more than 6 mm at more than 30 mm/s, confirm with the relevant authority whether a special conformity assessment category applies. Ask the manufacturer to establish whether that category applies and explain the assessment route.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Two hydraulic sheet metal clinching machines, illustrative only under 8462 61 90 00, invoiced at £28,000 free on board, with £4,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £32,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £32,000, so it is £6,400. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Joint quality: run the agreed sheet stacks and inspect sectioned joints for interlock, cracks and excessive thinning; compare strength results with the agreed acceptance criteria.

Tooling and access: check punch and die identification, alignment, fixture clearance, part removal and repeatability at the hardest-to-reach joint positions.

Safety and documents: arrange competent checks of guards, interlocks, emergency stops and stopping behaviour; match the declaration, marking and English instructions to the delivered machine.

Arrival condition: inspect the frame, tool mounts, hoses and cabinet for transit damage, corrosion or leaks; repeat the agreed joint trials after installation. Plan these checks through quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A trial on soft uncoated sheet can hide problems with the buyer's coated or harder material. Incorrect die selection or excessive stroke can produce cracks or a thin joint bottom; insufficient forming can leave a weak interlock. A neat visible button alone does not establish joint strength.

A machine may achieve a satisfactory joint on a flat coupon but fail to reach the same location on a folded enclosure. Tool misalignment, frame deflection and unstable supply pressure can also change the result. Agree trials on finished part shapes and keep approved samples for comparison on arrival.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on sheet metal clinching machines from China?

The relevant cold metal press lines in heading 8462 carried 0% duty in the supplied tariff record, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Import VAT is normally 20%.

Which commodity code should I use for a clinching machine?

Confirm the working operation, drive mechanism and whether it is numerically controlled. The table gives possible press lines; it does not assign every clinching machine to the same code.

What documents should accompany a new clinching machine?

For the Great Britain market, new machinery needs CE or UKCA marking, a declaration of conformity and English instructions. Check that the documents identify the machine actually supplied.

How do I check whether a clinched joint is strong enough?

Trial your actual sheet materials, coatings and stacking order. Agree sectioned-joint checks and pull-out or shear tests against your application criteria, then repeat the trials after installation.
