Sourcing rubberised diaphragm fabric from China

Rubberised diaphragm fabric from China carries standard UK duty of 4% to 8%, depending on construction; ordinary woven grades carry 4%. Check applicable UK REACH restrictions on the rubber and additives, and specify performance for the working fluid and repeated flexing. Cambridge China Bridge sources rubberised diaphragm fabric.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 6 November 2026, heading 5906 covers rubberised textile fabrics other than those of heading 5902. For diaphragm fabric, distinguish ordinary woven backing, knitted or crocheted backing, and parallel yarns agglomerated with rubber. This guide concerns fabric supplied for diaphragm manufacture. See the wider rubberised fabrics guide for other products in the heading.

Ordinary woven rubberised fabric under 5906 99 90 90 carries 4% duty from China; knitted or crocheted fabric carries 6%, and chapter note 5(c) fabric carries 8%. There is no anti-dumping duty. The listed polyamide rubberised fabric under 5906 99 90 90 has a 0% suspension, restricted to the specified material. The repeated code in the table distinguishes that listed material from ordinary fabric; a diaphragm application alone does not establish eligibility.

Confirm the commodity code using the backing construction, rubber composition and supplied form. The wider heading also includes a suspension for specified retractable vehicle-roof fabric under authorised use; do not use that description for ordinary diaphragm stock. For cellular rubber sheet with textile serving only as reinforcement, the published background identifies heading 4008 instead. Use the import duty and VAT guide for the calculation method.

Specify the diaphragm's working conditions

Specify the rubber compound, backing fibre and weave, coating on each face, total thickness, coating mass, usable width and roll length. Give the factory the diaphragm drawing and mark the fabric direction relative to the clamped edge. Agree tolerances and retain an approved sample.

Describe the working fluid, operating temperature, pressure changes and flexing movement. Ask for swelling, adhesion and flex-fatigue results on the proposed material after exposure to that fluid. A waterproof coating test alone does not establish suitability for a repeatedly moving diaphragm.

UK REACH generally applies to substances in articles, and its restrictions can limit, ban or condition placing substances on the market or using them. Ask the supplier for composition information and evidence addressing applicable restrictions on the rubber and additives; arrange testing and certification support where the evidence is incomplete.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 6,000 m of woven rubberised diaphragm fabric in rolls under 5906 99 90 90, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £13,500. Duty at 4% is £540. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £14,040, so it is £2,808. Import taxes total £3,348; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £540 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Dimensions: check thickness across the usable width, roll width and length against the agreed specification; identify the backing direction before cutting.

Coating: examine roll samples for pinholes, bare backing, blisters and exposed yarns; test coating adhesion against the approved sample, including after fluid exposure.

Flexing and sealing: test sample diaphragms in the intended clamping arrangement for leakage, permanent distortion, cracking and separation after the agreed flexing sequence.

Arrival condition: check for creases, blocking between layers, edge damage and batch identification; retain labelled samples from each delivery. See the quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

Fabric can look sound on the roll but fail after the rubber swells in the working fluid or separates from the backing during flexing. Uneven thickness can affect clamping, and exposed yarns or pinholes can create leakage paths. Creases from packing can remain in the cut diaphragm.

Agree acceptance tests before ordering and compare production material with the approved sample. Keep fluid-exposure and flexing results tied to the supplied batch, and investigate changes in compound or backing before accepting replacement stock.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on rubberised diaphragm fabric from China?

Ordinary woven fabric carries 4%, knitted or crocheted fabric 6%, and chapter note 5(c) fabric 8%. A specifically listed material may qualify for a 0% suspension. Classification depends on construction.

What should I send a diaphragm fabric supplier?

Send the diaphragm drawing, working fluid, temperature and pressure conditions, backing direction, rubber and fibre specification, thickness tolerances and proposed acceptance tests.

How do I check whether diaphragm fabric will leak?

Inspect for pinholes and exposed yarns, then test sample diaphragms with the intended fluid and clamping arrangement. Repeat leakage and adhesion checks after the agreed flexing sequence.

Is a waterproof fabric report enough?

It does not establish fluid compatibility or flex-fatigue performance. Ask for tests on the proposed compound and backing after exposure to the working fluid, followed by repeated flexing.
