Sourcing rubberised bellows fabric from China

Rubberised bellows fabric from China carries standard UK duty of 4% to 8%, depending on its construction. Check the coating chemistry against applicable UK REACH restrictions for Great Britain, and test adhesion after repeated folding. Cambridge China Bridge sources rubberised bellows fabric.

Standard duty of 4% to 8%

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 5906 covers rubberised textile fabrics. Other woven fabric carries 4% duty from China, knitted or crocheted fabric 6%, and the parallel-yarn fabric described in chapter note 5(c) 8%. The table includes separately bought cloth adhesive seam tape; it is an ancillary material, rather than the bellows fabric itself. See the rubberised diaphragm fabric guide for wider heading coverage.

The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duties or import controls for these table rows. Under 5906 99 90 90, a 0% suspension applies only to the specified polyamide-based yarn composition, not to rubberised bellows fabric generally. The authorised-use suspension under 5906 99 90 20 concerns specified retractable vehicle-roof fabric, rather than ordinary bellows fabric. Confirm eligibility before costing an order.

Confirm the commodity code using the base textile, rubber compound, coating construction and supplied form. This guide concerns fabric rolls for making bellows; ask for a separate classification check for finished bellows. Plastic-coated fabrics and cellular rubber sheets with textile reinforcement need different classification checks. The illustrative order uses the standard woven-fabric rate; see UK import duty and VAT for the calculation method.

Specify the folds and working environment

Specify the base fibre and weave, rubber compound, coated faces, thickness, mass per unit area, usable width and roll length. Give the factory the intended fold profile, movement, compression and extension, together with exposure to coolant, oil, dust, heat or outdoor weather. Agree acceptance criteria using a retained sample and a folding trial that represents the intended bellows.

Agree how the fabric will be cut, bonded or stitched, including coating orientation and seam preparation. Trial the actual adhesive and mating material before approving production. For Great Britain, UK REACH restrictions can limit, ban or set conditions on substances. Ask for a composition and restricted-substances statement covering the exact coating and finish, supported by relevant test reports.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 6,000 metres of woven rubberised bellows fabric in rolls under 5906 99 90 90, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £13,500. Duty at 4% is £540. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £14,040, so it is £2,808. Import taxes total £3,348; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £540 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Roll identity: match batch labels to the approved material, measure usable width and roll length, and check thickness and mass across the roll.

Coating: inspect for pinholes, bare yarns, blisters and blocking between layers; test adhesion on samples before and after the agreed folding and ageing trials.

Folding: form the intended pleats and check for cracking, whitening, delamination and resistance to compression; repeat after exposure to the specified working fluids.

Seams: make trial joints using the production method and check peeling, tearing and leakage where sealing is required. Record results against the retained sample; use the quality inspection guide to brief the inspection.

What goes wrong

A smooth coating can still crack at the fold root or separate from the textile after movement. Excessive stiffness prevents the bellows compressing properly, while an unsuitable compound swells or hardens in coolant or oil. Uneven coating leaves local weak areas, and fabric that sticks to itself can be damaged during unwinding.

A successful flat-sample test does not establish performance in a folded assembly. Trial the fold geometry and seam method together, and retain incoming samples by batch. Investigate any change in feel, odour or surface bloom before using the roll in production.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on rubberised bellows fabric from China?

Standard duty is 4% for other woven rubberised fabric, 6% for knitted or crocheted fabric and 8% for chapter note 5(c) fabric. A narrowly specified composition under 5906 99 90 90 has a 0% suspension.

Does the fabric code also cover finished bellows?

Do not assume it does. This guide covers fabric rolls. Give your customs broker the finished bellows drawing, materials and intended use for a separate classification check.

How do I check whether the coating will crack?

Fold samples to the intended profile and repeat the agreed movement after relevant fluid exposure and ageing. Check the fold roots for cracks and coating separation.

What should I ask the factory for before ordering?

Request the exact textile and rubber specification, coating and finish information, relevant restricted-substances reports, batch traceability and samples for folding and seam trials.
