Sourcing rubberised fuel-tank fabric from China
Rubberised flexible fuel-tank fabric from China normally attracts 4% duty when classified as other woven rubberised fabric; alternative constructions carry 6% or 8%. Applicable UK REACH restrictions must be checked for the materials supplied. Specify fuel compatibility and test the intended seams. Cambridge China Bridge sources rubberised flexible fuel-tank fabric.

Woven fabric: 4%; other constructions: 6% or 8%
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 5906 covers rubberised textile fabrics other than those of heading 5902. Other woven rubberised fabric under 5906 99 90 90 carries 4% duty from China; knitted or crocheted fabric carries 6%, and chapter note 5(c) fabric carries 8%. The table includes alternative constructions and ancillary cloth tape, rather than interchangeable fuel-tank grades.
The snapshot lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. A 0% suspension under 5906 99 90 90 covers only the specifically described polyamide-based fabric. The separate retractable-roof fabric line has an authorised-use suspension and a supplementary-unit import measure; ask your customs broker to confirm that requirement if considering that line. Neither the roof nor life-raft description is a general fuel-tank fabric category. No import control is listed against the residual woven-fabric line.
Confirm the commodity code using the base textile, rubber composition, construction and imported form. PVC and polyurethane coated fabrics belong to heading 5903, as explained in the published background guides. Have finished tanks assessed separately from fabric rolls. For related rubberised materials within the wider heading, see rubberised inflatable-boat fabric.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Other woven rubberised fabric, including suitable fuel-tank grades | 5906 99 90 90 | 4% | None |
| Knitted or crocheted rubberised fabric | 5906 91 00 00 | 6% | None |
| Parallel-yarn fabric agglomerated with rubber under chapter note 5(c) | 5906 99 10 00 | 8% | None |
| Rubberised cloth adhesive tape, not exceeding 20 cm wide, for ancillary work | 5906 10 00 00 | 4% | None |
Specify the fuel, coating and seam process
Name the intended fuel and its blend, the contact temperature and exposure conditions. Specify the base fibre, weave, rubber compound, coating on each face, thickness, coating mass, usable width and roll length. Agree acceptance criteria for swelling, permeation, coating adhesion, tear strength and repeated folding. Ask for results on the exact supplied grade after exposure to the intended fuel.
Trial the fabric with the adhesive, curing process and fittings intended for the tank. Test seams and fitting patches after fuel exposure and flexing, alongside unexposed samples. Specify electrical resistance and how it will be measured where the tank design calls for static control. Keep an approved sample and identify each production batch.
UK REACH restrictions limit, ban or set conditions on the manufacture, sale or use of substances. Ask for a composition-based restricted-substances statement covering the rubber and finishes. Separately, workplace dangerous-substances rules require employers to assess fire and explosion risks from dangerous substances; fuel trials should be planned with that assessment.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 6,000 m of woven rubberised flexible fuel-tank fabric under 5906 99 90 90, invoiced at £12,000 free on board, with £1,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £13,500. Duty at 4% is £540. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £14,040, so it is £2,808. Import taxes total £3,348; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £540 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Roll identity: match batch labels, grade, usable width and roll length to the order; check thickness and coating mass against the approved specification.
Barrier surface: inspect both faces for pinholes, bare textile, blisters, contamination and fold damage; retain samples from different rolls.
Fuel exposure: compare swelling, surface tack, cracking and permeation results with the agreed criteria, using the specified fuel and exposure conditions.
Adhesion and seams: check coating adhesion by ISO 2411 and trial bonded seams and fitting patches before and after fuel exposure and flexing. Arrange testing and certification support where needed.

What goes wrong
A fabric sold as waterproof can still swell, soften or allow fuel vapour through. A changed rubber compound or uneven coating can produce different behaviour across batches. A report for a similar grade or a different fuel does not establish performance for your order.
Seams may peel after immersion, while repeated folding can expose textile at creases. Fitting patches can fail even when the fabric sample passes. Agree separate checks for the fabric, seam process and assembled tank, and keep batch samples for comparison. See quality inspection explained.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on rubberised fuel-tank fabric from China?
The supplied tariff snapshot gives 4% for other woven rubberised fabric, 6% for knitted or crocheted fabric and 8% for chapter note 5(c) fabric. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty is listed.
Does all rubberised fuel-tank fabric qualify for suspended duty?
No. The 0% suspension under 5906 99 90 90 covers only the specifically described polyamide-based fabric. Match the complete description before claiming it.
Can I use waterproof rubberised fabric for a petrol bladder?
Waterproofness alone does not establish fuel suitability. Request tests for the intended fuel, covering swelling, permeation, coating adhesion and bonded seams after exposure.
What should I send a factory when requesting fuel-tank fabric?
Send the fuel specification, exposure conditions, base textile, rubber compound, dimensions, seam process and acceptance criteria. Ask for batch-linked results on the proposed grade.
