Sourcing rotational viscometers from China

Rotational viscometers and their dedicated parts have a candidate UK duty rate of 0% for goods from China. Before selling electrical models in Great Britain, assess electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility and hazardous-substance requirements. Cambridge China Bridge sources rotational viscometers.

UK duty on rotational viscometers

Heading 9027 includes instruments for measuring or checking viscosity. Rotational viscometers are candidates for 9027 89 90 00; dedicated parts and accessories may fit 9027 90 00 00. The table repeats the instrument code for different buying configurations. For the wider heading, see our digital polarimeter guide.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 10 December 2026, both selected lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty or suspension. The instrument line has an export control of mercury attached. The importer should ask their customs broker to confirm its relevance and any requirement for the shipment from China. The parts line has no attached control.

Confirm the commodity code using the operating principle, technical datasheet and complete shipment contents. Have separately supplied spindles, temperature-control equipment and calibration liquids classified on their own descriptions rather than assuming everything uses the instrument code.

Specify the spindle, speed and sample conditions

Describe the liquids or pastes you test and agree the spindle geometry, rotational speeds, usable torque range, sample vessel and immersion depth. Specify accuracy and repeatability separately from display resolution. For materials whose apparent viscosity changes with speed or handling, agree the mixing, resting and measurement sequence so the factory can reproduce your method.

Define sample temperature, temperature-control arrangements, wetted materials and cleaning procedures. Agree checks using documented reference liquids at their stated temperature, with results linked to the instrument serial number. Specify replacement spindle availability, shaft protection during transport and any required data export.

For Great Britain sales, assess electrical safety scope against the rated supply, including any external power supply. Assess electromagnetic compatibility and hazardous-substance restrictions for the exact model. Request declarations and supporting documents through testing and certification. For equipment within the hazardous-substance rules, individual products must show the importer's name or trademark and contactable address on the product or packaging.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of benchtop rotational viscometers for a laboratory supplier, not a quotation under 9027 89 90 00, invoiced at £10,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £10,900. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £10,900, so it is £2,180. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Measurement: repeat reference-liquid readings at the agreed temperature, spindle and speed before shipment and on arrival. Record torque indications and compare results with the agreed acceptance limits.

Mechanical condition: inspect spindle straightness, shaft alignment, coupling threads, stand stability and levelling adjustment. Run the instrument and check for wobble or rubbing.

Sample handling: check immersion markings, vessel clearance, temperature readings and cleaning access. Confirm the supplied spindle set matches the purchase specification.

Documents: match model, serial identification and power supply to the calibration record and conformity documents. Electromagnetic compatibility guidance requires the manufacturer to supply relevant English instructions. Use the inspection guide to agree the checks.

What goes wrong

A broad advertised viscosity range can conceal unsuitable spindle and speed combinations for your samples. Temperature drift, bubbles, incorrect immersion and different sample preparation can produce conflicting readings. Compare instruments using the same sample conditions and record the method alongside the result.

A bent spindle or damaged coupling can cause unstable readings after transport. Calibration paperwork for another serial number does not establish the delivered instrument's performance. Keep spindles protected separately and resolve mismatched records or failed reference checks before accepting the batch.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on rotational viscometers from China?

The supplied tariff facts show 0% duty under candidate instrument code 9027 89 90 00 and parts code 9027 90 00 00, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Confirm classification for your shipment.

Can I choose a rotational viscometer by viscosity range alone?

No. Specify spindle geometry, speeds, usable torque range, sample vessel, immersion depth and temperature. Agree accuracy and repeatability for samples representative of your work.

Why does my new viscometer disagree with the old instrument?

Compare spindle geometry, speed, temperature, immersion depth and sample preparation. Materials that change with shear or resting time need a consistent measurement sequence.

What documents should accompany a rotational viscometer?

Request a calibration record linked to the serial number, the agreed reference-test results, operating instructions and conformity documents matching the instrument and supplied power supply.
