Sourcing UV-vis spectrophotometers from China

UV-visible spectrophotometers from China carry 0% UK duty under 9027 30 00 00, with no trade remedies shown in the supplied tariff snapshot. For electrical equipment in scope, importers must ensure instructions are in easily understandable English. Cambridge China Bridge sources UV-visible spectrophotometers.

UK duty on UV-visible spectrophotometers

Heading 9027 covers physical and chemical analysis instruments. UV-visible spectrophotometers sit within 9027 30 00 00, covering spectrometers, spectrophotometers and spectrographs using optical radiation. The table separates instrument configurations sharing that code; it does not imply different tariff lines.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 16 October 2026, the supplied snapshot records 0% duty for goods from China on the instrument and parts codes shown, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures, suspensions or attached controls. A mercury export control appears on a different line within the heading; it is not attached to these selected codes.

Confirm the commodity code using the operating principle, intended use and contents of the shipment. Dedicated parts need separate classification checks, especially lamps and general-purpose accessories. See the microscopes guide for related laboratory purchasing, rather than treating all optical instruments as interchangeable. For chromatography equipment, see sourcing HPLC systems from China.

Specify the optical system and sample workflow

Specify single-beam or double-beam operation, wavelength coverage, spectral bandwidth, wavelength accuracy, photometric accuracy, stray-light performance and baseline stability. Agree the acceptance method and tolerances in writing. Request results from the exact model and configuration, rather than a brochure covering the supplier's whole range.

Define the sample holder, cuvette material and optical path, temperature control if needed, lamp arrangement and replacement procedure. Confirm whether operation needs a connected computer, what software is included, how results are exported and whether licences remain usable after installation.

For Great Britain sales, electrical equipment in scope must have instructions in easily understandable English. Electromagnetic compatibility rules cover electrical and electronic equipment liable to generate disturbance, subject to exceptions. An importer must be able to evidence compliance with hazardous-substance restrictions when requested by OPSS. Commercial importers supplying the UK market must register annually as electrical equipment producers; importing solely for your own use is treated differently. Arrange testing and certification around the exact configuration.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative small batch of benchtop UV-visible spectrophotometers under 9027 30 00 00, invoiced at £10,000 free on board, with £900 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £10,900. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £10,900, so it is £2,180. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Optical performance: check wavelength and absorbance results using agreed reference materials and methods; retain raw results alongside the serial number.

Sample handling: check cuvette seating, lid closure, holder movement, blanking and repeated readings with the supplied accessories.

Software and documents: check installation, result export, supplied licences, English instructions and correspondence between the model, test reports and declaration.

Arrival condition: check transport locks, packing, loose components and lamp operation; repeat the agreed performance checks after installation. Plan quality inspection before shipment as well.

What goes wrong

A wavelength range alone does not establish suitability for an analytical method. Unagreed bandwidth, stray-light performance or cuvette material can make an apparently suitable instrument fail the buyer's method. Ask the factory to demonstrate the intended workflow with representative samples before approving production.

Generic reports, changed lamp assemblies, missing software licences and transit movement can leave the delivered instrument different from the approved sample. Record the configuration and supplied accessories in the order, retain factory test results and compare them with arrival checks.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For components and parts, see sourcing for manufacturers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on UV-visible spectrophotometers from China?

The supplied tariff snapshot shows 0% under 9027 30 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Import VAT is separate.

Are single-beam and double-beam instruments different tariff codes?

Both configurations fit the optical spectrophotometer description under 9027 30 00 00. Confirm classification from the actual instrument and intended use.

What should I specify before ordering?

Agree wavelength coverage, bandwidth, accuracy, stray-light performance, sample holders, cuvettes, software and acceptance methods. Ask for results for the exact configuration.

Must a UK laboratory register as an electrical equipment producer?

Commercial importers supplying the UK market must register annually. Official guidance excludes equipment bought abroad and brought into the UK solely for your own use from the producer definition.
