UK duty on roller coaster systems

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 October 2026, roller coasters under 9508 21 00 00 carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied extract lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension for this line. Heading 9508 covers wider amusement equipment, but the table here contains only the roller coaster line. See the wider amusement equipment guide.

The tariff attaches CITES and cat and dog fur import controls. For any listed-species material, confirm the necessary CITES permit or notification with your customs broker before shipment. Imports of cat and dog fur and products made from it are banned. The extract also lists cultural-object export licensing, CITES export controls and cat and dog fur export controls; confirm the requirements with your broker before re-export.

Confirm the commodity code against the equipment actually supplied, including how dismantled deliveries and separately purchased components will be declared. Do not automatically apply the complete ride's code to spare parts. For the illustrative order, use the import duty and VAT guide to understand the calculation.

Specify the track, trains and braking system

Give the factory the site layout, track arrangement, train configuration, passenger capacity, rider limits, speed and forces, power supply and foundation interfaces. Specify wheel assemblies, restraint locking, brakes, sensors, emergency stops and evacuation access. Agree the English drawings, structural calculations, operating manual, spare parts and training to be supplied.

Confirm with HSE or your chosen inspection body whether the UK amusement device inspection scheme, design review, assessment of conformity to design, initial testing before public use and subsequent annual inspection apply to your ride. Engage the inspection body before manufacture and agree the evidence it needs. Use factory verification to check the maker's design capability, welding records and test facilities.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: A complete compact roller coaster system, illustrative order under 9508 21 00 00, invoiced at £58,000 free on board, with £6,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £64,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £64,500, so it is £12,900. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Documents: match track drawings, structural calculations, material certificates, weld inspection records and operating instructions to the delivered configuration.

Track and supports: on arrival, check identification marks, missing fasteners, bent flanges, corrosion, transit damage and alignment against the agreed drawings.

Trains and restraints: check wheel assemblies, couplings, restraint engagement and locking, and compare the delivered assemblies with the witnessed factory tests.

Brakes and controls: have the agreed tests witnessed for braking, sensor faults, interlocks and emergency stops; record results against the inspection plan.

What goes wrong

Track sections arrive without matching identification, support connections do not fit the foundation drawings, or train components differ from the reviewed design. Missing calculations, incomplete weld records and restraint or braking faults can leave substantial work to resolve after delivery.

Keep a controlled drawing set and require approval before substitutions. Agree who resolves installation defects, supplies replacement parts and supports testing. Use the quality inspection guide to brief the inspection, and close outstanding findings before accepting the system.
