UK duty on log flume rides

Heading 9508 covers amusement park rides, water park amusements and fairground amusements alongside travelling circuses and theatres. For complete log flume rides, start with water rides, 9508 25 00 00. The other table entries are classification comparisons, not alternative codes for the same ride. Confirm the commodity code against the complete equipment and shipment contents. For the wider heading, see commercial water slides.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 4 October 2026, the water-rides line carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspensions. It attaches CITES and cat and dog fur import controls, and also lists corresponding export controls and a cultural-goods export licence measure. Import VAT is separate; see UK import duty and VAT.

Check the materials used in boats, seating and themed decoration. CITES guidance requires permits for species listed in Annex A, B or C; for materials from China, ask your customs broker to confirm the applicable permits and restrictions before shipment. Imports of cat and dog fur and products made from that fur are banned. Specify synthetic decoration and obtain a material declaration rather than assuming the ride's appearance establishes its composition.

Specify the boats, water channel and lift

Define the site layout, channel profile, drops, boat dimensions, passenger capacity and intended rider limits. Agree boat construction, guide wheels or runners, joints, seals, corrosion protection and access for maintenance. Specify lift machinery, rollback protection, pumps, water levels, drainage and the interfaces with foundations, power and water treatment.

Arrange design review before manufacture. Confirm with HSE or the UK inspection body the applicable ride inspection process, including assessment of conformity to design, initial testing and ongoing inspection arrangements under the Amusement Devices Inspection Procedures Scheme. Agree English drawings, calculations, operating instructions, evacuation arrangements and test records with the UK inspection body. Use factory verification to check the manufacturer's design and fabrication capability.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: A compact complete log flume ride for an independent operator; illustrative order under 9508 25 00 00, invoiced at £58,000 free on board, with £6,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £64,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £64,500, so it is £12,900. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Documents: match drawings, boat identification, calculations and inspection records to the supplied configuration; record design changes and unresolved review comments.

Boats and channel: inspect hulls, seating, fitted restraints, guide components, channel joints and seals; on arrival, check cracks, distortion, missing fasteners and transit damage.

Lift and controls: witness agreed tests of boat spacing, lift engagement, rollback protection, sensors, interlocks, emergency stops and restart behaviour using the planned test loads.

Water and delivery: check leaks, pump operation, operating water levels and drainage; reconcile packed components, spare seals and maintenance tools with the delivery list.

What goes wrong

A boat and channel can each match their drawings yet bind when assembled together. Check their clearances as a system. Leaking joints, damaged hulls, unsuitable coatings and inaccessible seals can create rework after installation. Agree assembly checks and record the condition of components when unpacked.

Changes to boats, lift components or control logic can leave the supplied ride different from the reviewed design. Keep changes traceable and resolve inspection comments before shipment. Factory demonstrations should follow an agreed test plan covering faults as well as normal running. Use the quality inspection guide to define shipment checks.
