UK duty on commercial water slides

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 8 November 2026, heading 9508 covers amusement park rides and water park amusements alongside other entertainment equipment. Water park amusements and water rides from China carry 0% duty. The supplied tariff data records no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or steel measures on these lines.

The tariff attaches CITES and cat and dog fur import controls. Cat and dog fur, including products containing it, cannot be imported. For any protected-species materials, check CITES permit requirements with your customs broker. The tariff also lists cultural-object export licensing and corresponding export controls; ask your broker to confirm their relevance if you later export the equipment.

Confirm the commodity code using the actual slide design and shipment contents. The table includes adjacent amusement categories for comparison; these are not interchangeable slide classifications. See the wider amusement equipment guide for other equipment within the heading.

Specify the flume and its site interfaces

State whether riders use the slide directly or with mats or rafts. Agree the flume layout, material and surface finish, joint details, support structure, access stairs, launch platform and landing arrangement. Identify exactly which pumps, pipework, controls and installation materials the factory supplies.

Give the supplier the site survey and agree foundation loads, fixing locations, water supply interfaces and maintenance access. Request structural calculations, assembly drawings, an English manual, rider restrictions and spare-part identification before approving production.

HSE guidance calls for appropriate arrangements for slide use and supervision. Plan those arrangements alongside the design, including how staff will oversee the launch and landing areas. Use factory verification to examine the supplier's design and manufacturing capability.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: a commercial water slide package for a leisure pool under 9508 26 00 00, invoiced at £58,000 free on board, with £6,500 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £64,500. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £64,500, so it is £12,900. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Flume: check for cracks, exposed fibres, rough edges and steps at assembled joints; compare the surface and joint finish with the agreed sample.

Structure: check support identification, weld records, corrosion protection, fasteners and fixing positions against the approved drawings.

Documents and interfaces: check assembly instructions, packing lists, water connections, supplied controls and spare parts against the purchase specification.

Arrival: inspect unpacked sections for transport damage, match section markings to the assembly drawings and record missing fittings before installation. Agree the inspection scope using the quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

Problems to watch for include flume joints that fit poorly, damaged surface coatings, supports that do not match the foundation drawings and a landing arrangement that differs from the site plan. Buying only the visible slide can leave pumps, fittings or installation work outside the supplier's package.

Approve the complete layout and supply boundaries before manufacture. Agree how discrepancies will be corrected and who will commission the installed system. A factory inspection should feed into the site acceptance process; plan supervision before opening the slide to users.
