Sourcing speaker drivers from China

Replacement loudspeaker drivers from China carry 0% UK duty on the listed unmounted loudspeaker and parts lines. Hazardous-substance rules cover electrical equipment and spare parts unless specifically excluded, so confirm the status of the supplied item. Cambridge China Bridge sources replacement loudspeaker drivers.

Duty on replacement drivers and parts

Heading 8518 covers loudspeakers, whether or not mounted in enclosures, alongside other audio equipment and parts. For replacement drivers, distinguish a functioning loudspeaker supplied without an enclosure from a cone, diaphragm or other component. The table separates driver types for buying purposes; several share the same commodity code.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, the listed unmounted loudspeaker and parts lines carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff data lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or attached import controls for these lines. Import VAT is normally 20%; zero duty does not mean VAT-free.

Confirm the supplied assembly through finding your commodity code. For enclosed installations and the wider loudspeaker category, see commercial ceiling speakers. Check tax treatment separately in UK import duty and VAT.

Specify the driver against the existing cabinet

Send the factory a drawing and an approved reference driver. Specify basket diameter, mounting-hole positions, cut-out, mounting depth, gasket and terminal orientation. State nominal impedance, sensitivity, frequency response and the method behind any power-handling claim. For bass drivers, request resonance and enclosure-design parameters; for tweeters, check the intended crossover and protection arrangement.

Define cone, surround, voice-coil and magnet materials, polarity and permitted substitutions. Compare samples in the intended cabinet with its existing crossover. Matching the mounting holes alone does not establish acoustic compatibility.

For Great Britain, official hazardous-substance guidance includes electrical equipment, cables and spare parts unless specifically excluded. Confirm the status of the exact supplied driver before deciding the compliance paperwork. Separately, official waste-electrical guidance says spare parts supplied to repair a finished product are not electrical equipment products for that scheme.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative mixed batch of replacement bass drivers for a repair workshop under 8518 29 00 90, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,200, so it is £1,840. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: compare the basket, holes, depth, gasket and terminals with the approved drawing and trial-fit a sample in the intended cabinet.

Electrical checks: measure coil resistance, confirm polarity and compare impedance behaviour with the approved sample.

Sound: run a controlled sweep and listening comparison; check rubbing, buzzing, distortion and output differences between matched drivers.

Arrival condition: inspect cones, surrounds, baskets and terminals for transit damage; match model and batch identification to the purchase specification. Agree these checks through quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A driver can fit physically but sound wrong because its sensitivity, impedance curve or resonance differs from the original. A substituted voice coil, surround or magnet can change performance while leaving the appearance unchanged. Require approval before material changes and retain reference samples.

Poor support inside cartons can dent cones, bend baskets or damage terminals. Ask for packaging that supports the frame and keeps pressure off the moving assembly. Photograph damage on arrival and keep affected batches separate while the supplier investigates.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on replacement loudspeaker drivers from China?

The supplied tariff reading shows 0% duty for unmounted loudspeakers under 8518 29 00 90 and parts under 8518 90 00 00, with no listed trade remedies. Confirm which code describes the supplied item.

Will a replacement driver fit my existing speaker cabinet?

Check mounting holes, cut-out, depth, gasket and terminal clearance against a drawing. Then test the driver in the intended cabinet with the existing crossover.

Does matching impedance make a driver interchangeable?

No. Compare sensitivity, frequency response, resonance and crossover behaviour as well as impedance. Approve a sample in the actual cabinet before buying the production batch.

Do replacement drivers fall under electrical waste rules?

Official guidance says spare parts supplied to repair a finished product are not electrical equipment products for the waste-electrical scheme. Confirm that your supply is genuinely a repair spare.
