Sourcing audio amplifiers from China
Audio amplifiers, sound amplifier sets and their parts from China carry 0% UK duty across the selected lines. Alongside the zero duty rate, confirm the electrical safety obligations for mains-powered amplifiers with the relevant product safety authority, and match conformity paperwork to the finished model. Zero duty on amplifiers, sets and parts
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 3 October 2026, heading 8518 includes audio-frequency electric amplifiers, electric sound amplifier sets and parts, alongside microphones, loudspeakers and headphones. The selected amplifier, set and parts lines all carry 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied tariff data lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls for these lines.
The amplifier code appears twice in the table to show different buying specifications, not different tariff rates. Confirm whether the shipment is a finished amplifier, a sound amplifier set or separately supplied parts using the commodity code guide. Zero duty does not mean zero import VAT; see UK import duty and VAT. For the wider heading, see headphones and Bluetooth speakers.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Audio-frequency power amplifiers | 8518 40 00 90 | 0% | None |
| Electric sound amplifier sets | 8518 50 00 90 | 0% | None |
| Parts for audio amplifiers | 8518 90 00 00 | 0% | None |
Specify measured output and the finished configuration
State continuous output per channel at the agreed speaker impedance, distortion limit and frequency range, including whether all channels are driven together. Specify inputs, input sensitivity, gain, speaker terminals, cooling, protection behaviour and the supplied power lead. Agree a repeatable test method rather than accepting an unexplained peak-power figure.
For mains-powered models, obtain electrical safety technical documentation, a declaration of conformity, CE or UKCA marking and importer identification. Non-radio amplifiers must meet the applicable electromagnetic compatibility requirements. Ask for model-matched safety and electromagnetic compatibility reports and hazardous-substance documentation. Under the hazardous-substance rules, individual products must show the importer's name or trademark and contactable address on the product or packaging.
Electrical safety rules require easily understandable English instructions. Electrical goods also bring waste-electrical-equipment obligations; producers must register annually. Check your role before sale using the WEEE guide, and agree the documentation scope through testing and certification.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative small commercial batch of integrated audio amplifiers under 8518 40 00 90, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,200, so it is £1,840. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Output: measure each channel under the agreed load and test conditions; compare distortion, clipping and channel balance with the approved sample.
Heat and protection: run the agreed sustained-load test, check fan noise and ventilation, and verify protection and recovery against the specification.
Construction: compare the power supply, amplifier components, heatsinks, connectors and internal wiring with the approved build; record substitutions.
Labels and arrival condition: match model identification, markings and instructions to the paperwork; inspect terminals, rack fittings, casing and packaging for transit damage.
What goes wrong
A peak-power claim can conceal weak continuous output. A smaller power supply or heatsink may pass a brief demonstration but produce clipping, fan noise or thermal shutdown during sustained use. Keep the approved component list and load-test method attached to the order.
Reports for a similar model can miss a changed power supply, enclosure or wireless module. Match the finished configuration to the documentation before shipment, and repeat the agreed functional checks on arrival. Agree whether a failed sample triggers wider inspection, repair or rejection before paying the balance.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on audio amplifiers from China?
The supplied tariff data shows 0% duty for audio amplifiers, electric sound amplifier sets and parts, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Import VAT is separate.
What output specification should I give an amplifier factory?
Specify continuous output per channel, speaker impedance, distortion limit, frequency range and whether all channels are driven together. Agree the measurement method and cooling conditions.
What paperwork should I ask for before importing amplifiers?
For mains-powered models, request electrical safety documentation, a declaration of conformity and model-matched reports. Check electromagnetic compatibility, hazardous-substance documentation, markings and English instructions.
How do I catch component substitutions in amplifier production?
Compare production samples with the approved component list and internal photographs. Check the power supply, amplifier components and heatsinks, then repeat the agreed output and sustained-load tests.
