Duty on microphone stands

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 8518 covers microphones and their stands alongside other audio equipment. This guide covers mechanical microphone stands. The table shows stand configurations using the same commodity line, rather than separate tariff classifications.

The supplied tariff record gives 8518 10 00 90 a duty rate of 0% for goods from China. It records no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control for that line. Zero duty does not remove import VAT; see import duty and VAT.

Confirm the finished stand and any separately supplied accessories against the commodity code guide. For the wider microphone product family, see wireless microphones.

Specify the mount, base and boom

Define whether the stand is for a desk, floor or clamped installation. Specify tube material, base weight and footprint, adjustment range, boom reach, mounting thread and included adaptors. Send the factory the microphone and holder dimensions, weight and intended working position.

Agree a sample with the intended microphone fitted. Test stability with the boom extended and the cable attached, height retention, clamp grip and repeated adjustment. Record the agreed load and reach together so a load claim cannot be detached from its test position.

Businesses making, importing, distributing or selling consumer products in the UK are responsible for their safety. For stands intended for home recording, assess tipping, collapsing joints, sharp edges and finger traps. Request assembly and adjustment instructions matched to the supplied design.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative mixed order of floor and desktop microphone stands under 8518 10 00 90, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,200, so it is £1,840. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Mounting: fit the intended microphone holder and supplied adaptors; check thread engagement, alignment and secure tightening.

Stability: assemble on the intended surface and test with the agreed microphone, boom position and cable routing.

Locks: operate height collars, boom pivots and desk clamps repeatedly; check for slipping, stripped threads and cracked knobs.

Arrival condition: check straight tubes, intact feet, coating damage, missing fittings and packaging that keeps heavy bases away from finished tubes.

What goes wrong

A lighter base or thinner tube can look like the approved sample while behaving differently under load. Compare production samples with the retained sample, including base weight, tube construction and joint movement. Ask the factory to seek approval before changing these components.

A boom may sag slowly after tightening, while a desk clamp may hold on the factory bench but slip on the buyer's desktop. Test the actual installation and leave the agreed load in position to observe movement. Use a written inspection checklist to record acceptance criteria.
