Duty on wired boundary microphones

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 8518 covers microphones and their stands, loudspeakers, headphones, audio-frequency amplifiers, sound amplifier sets and parts. Wired boundary microphones sit within the microphone family. The table also identifies related parts and amplification equipment for buyers ordering a complete installation.

The supplied tariff facts show 0% duty from China on every listed line, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures, suspensions or attached import controls. Zero customs duty does not remove import VAT. See UK import duty and VAT when budgeting goods and freight.

Confirm the finished product against the commodity code guide, especially when microphones arrive with separate amplifiers or as a complete sound amplifier set. For other microphone formats within the heading, see wireless microphones.

Specify the pickup pattern and connection

Define whether the microphone rests on a conference table or mounts flush into it. Specify pickup pattern, intended seating positions, capsule, output connection, cable length, shielding and power source. For phantom-powered designs, agree the supply range and test with the actual mixer. For computer-connected designs, approve the connection behaviour and recording software compatibility.

Agree mute-switch behaviour, indicator operation, underside isolation, mounting hardware and surface finish. Approve a speech recording made in the intended mounting position, including room noise and table handling. Keep the approved sample and prohibit capsule, circuit or cable substitutions without approval.

Assess electromagnetic compatibility scope for powered designs: the regulations cover electrical and electronic equipment liable to generate electromagnetic disturbance, subject to exceptions. For products within hazardous-substance rules, technical documentation is required to demonstrate compliance. Ask for model-matched documentation through testing and certification. Electrical-equipment producers must register annually under the waste regime.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of wired boundary microphones for meeting-room installations under 8518 10 00 90, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,200, so it is £1,840. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Speech pickup: compare production samples with the approved recording using the same table, seating positions, mixer settings and mounting arrangement.

Power and wiring: check startup, output polarity, connector wiring and compatibility with the agreed power source; listen for hum while moving the cable.

Controls and mounting: test mute and indicators, inspect strain relief, and check that pads or mounting fittings hold the microphone without rocking.

Identity and paperwork: match the model and circuit version to the supplied documents; check the agreed labels, instructions, accessories and packaging.

What goes wrong

A different capsule or preamplifier can change speech level, hiss and coverage while leaving the housing unchanged. Poor cable shielding or incorrect connector wiring can introduce hum or leave the microphone silent on the buyer's mixer. A mute switch may operate differently from the approved sample.

A microphone tested in the hand can behave differently on a hard table, where knocks and handling noise become apparent. Inspect it in its intended position and compare recordings before accepting the batch. Agree measurable acceptance criteria in the inspection brief.

Will a wired boundary microphone work with my mixer?

Check its power source, output connection and wiring against your mixer. Approve a sample tested on your actual equipment before ordering the production batch.

What compliance paperwork should I ask the factory for?

Ask for model-matched technical documentation demonstrating hazardous-substance compliance and an assessment of electromagnetic compatibility scope for the finished design.

How should I inspect a boundary microphone?

Test speech pickup on the intended surface, compare noise and output with the approved sample, and check cable movement, mute behaviour, mounting and power compatibility.
