Sourcing polylactic acid monofilament from China

Polylactic acid monofilament from China carries 0% UK duty within heading 5404. The heading requires at least 67 decitex and no cross-sectional dimension over 1 mm. Check measured size and composition before using the other-monofilament code; thicker filament needs a different classification. Cambridge China Bridge sources polylactic acid monofilament.

Zero duty within the textile monofilament limits

Heading 5404 covers synthetic monofilament of 67 decitex or more, with no cross-sectional dimension exceeding 1 mm, and synthetic strip of apparent width not exceeding 5 mm. This guide concerns polylactic acid monofilament within those limits. Monofilament over 1 mm belongs in plastics heading 3916. See the wider polyester monofilament guide for related sourcing considerations.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, all supplied lines carried 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied facts list no anti-dumping or countervailing duties, suspensions or attached import controls. Ordinary polylactic acid monofilament has candidate code 5404 19 00 90. The table shows buying formats within that same line, rather than separate tariff codes.

Confirm the commodity code using the polymer composition, linear density, measured cross-section and presentation. Ask your customs broker to check blends or specially processed filaments before declaration. Use the import duty and VAT guide when preparing the landed-cost calculation.

Specify the polymer and its processing performance

Specify polylactic acid composition, resin grade, any blended polymers, colourants and additives. Agree diameter tolerance, ovality, linear density, breaking strength, elongation, surface finish and net weight per spool. For brush applications, include stiffness and recovery; for weaving or mesh production, trial the filament on your own equipment. Keep an approved sample and agree the test method for each acceptance criterion.

Agree moisture protection, storage instructions, spool dimensions and winding direction. For textile products sold in Great Britain, official guidance requires fibre-content labelling; check how the rules apply to your industrial supply format. UK REACH restrictions can limit, ban or set conditions on substances. Request composition information so you can assess relevant restrictions on the proposed colourants and additives.

Do not approve a compostability claim from the polymer name alone. Ask for evidence covering the finished filament, including its colourants and additives. Official environmental-claims guidance says conditions or caveats should be clearly stated when a claim is only true under those conditions.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative trial order: 30 kg of polylactic acid monofilament on industrial spools under 5404 19 00 90, invoiced at £1,800 free on board, with £120 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £1,920. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £1,920, so it is £384. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Dimensions: measure diameter along sampled spools, check ovality and compare linear density with the agreed specification.

Performance: test breaking strength and elongation, then run samples through your intended weaving, mesh or brush-making process.

Winding and protection: check spool fit, winding direction, tangles, net weight and intact moisture-protective packaging.

Identity and records: match resin grade, colour, batch identification and supporting reports to the approved sample. Use the quality inspection guide to brief the inspector.

What goes wrong

The supplier may offer printing filament when you need textile monofilament. Check the measured cross-section before agreeing the code. Within textile sizes, diameter drift, ovality, rough surfaces and uneven winding can cause inconsistent feeding or breaks. An unapproved polymer blend can also change the performance demonstrated by the sample.

A dry sample does not prove that the shipment will arrive in the same condition. Check packaging on arrival and compare delivered material with the retained sample before releasing it to production. Keep environmental claims separate from mechanical acceptance: a strength report does not establish compostability.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on polylactic acid monofilament from China?

The supplied tariff facts show 0% duty within heading 5404, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Ordinary qualifying monofilament has candidate code 5404 19 00 90.

Is polylactic acid printing filament covered by heading 5404?

Check its dimensions. Heading 5404 requires at least 67 decitex and no cross-sectional dimension over 1 mm. Thicker monofilament belongs in plastics heading 3916.

What should I test before ordering polylactic acid monofilament?

Check composition, diameter consistency, ovality, breaking strength, elongation and winding. Trial the approved sample on your intended equipment and agree packaging and storage instructions.

Can I describe polylactic acid monofilament as compostable?

Ask for evidence covering the finished filament. State any conditions or caveats clearly, including the disposal conditions supported by that evidence.
