Sourcing PEEK monofilament from China

PEEK monofilament from China carries 0% UK duty under the other-monofilament line, with no recorded trade remedy. Heading 5404 requires at least 67 decitex and no cross-sectional dimension above 1 mm. Specify resin grade, diameter tolerance and performance in your process. Zero duty within the monofilament limits

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, heading 5404 covers synthetic monofilament of 67 decitex or more with no cross-sectional dimension exceeding 1 mm, and synthetic strip of an apparent width not exceeding 5 mm. This guide covers PEEK monofilament within those limits.

The relevant other-monofilament line, 5404 19 00 90, records 0% duty for goods from China. The supplied snapshot records no anti-dumping or countervailing measure, suspension or attached import control. The table shows PEEK supply variants sharing that line, rather than separate tariff subdivisions.

Confirm the commodity code using the polymer description, measured cross-section and linear density. Monofilament with a cross-section over 1 mm falls outside this heading. See the PPS monofilament guide for related coverage of the wider heading.

Specify the PEEK grade and working conditions

Write polyetheretherketone in the material specification, together with the resin manufacturer and grade, permitted additives, colour and whether reprocessed material is acceptable. Ask for resin purchase records and batch identification linking the resin to the supplied spools. A sample's colour alone does not establish polymer identity.

Specify diameter and tolerance, ovality, linear density, breaking strength, elongation, spool dimensions, net filament weight and permitted joins. For filter weaving or brush manufacture, agree trials on your equipment. Define the operating temperature, chemical exposure, load and cleaning conditions, then agree acceptance tests for those conditions.

UK REACH restrictions address chemical risks in substances, mixtures and articles. Ask for composition information and a review of restrictions relevant to the intended use. For food-contact applications, request evidence for the polymer and colourants. New additives in plastic food-contact materials cannot be placed on the market until authorisation is complete.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 12 kilograms of natural-colour PEEK monofilament on spools under 5404 19 00 90, invoiced at £1,800 free on board, with £120 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £1,920. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £1,920, so it is £384. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match spool labels and batch records to the approved resin grade, colour and additive specification. Arrange polymer identification testing where the material identity needs independent confirmation.

Dimensions: measure diameter along sampled spools and across the batch. Check ovality, surface scratches, roughness and contamination against the approved sample.

Performance: test breaking strength and elongation, then trial the filament in the intended weaving or brush process. Compare behaviour after the agreed heat, chemical or cleaning exposure.

Winding: check net filament weight, spool fit, joins and unwinding tension. Run sampled spools to identify crossed turns, tangles or breaks. Use the quality inspection guide to define the inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A spool can match the nominal diameter yet fail in production because its ovality, surface finish or winding differs from the approved sample. Diameter drift can change woven openings or brush stiffness. Missing resin records make substitutions and unapproved changes harder to investigate.

A room-temperature strength result does not demonstrate performance under your operating conditions. Keep an approved spool and its test results, compare production batches with that reference, and investigate changes before releasing stock to customers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on PEEK monofilament from China?

The supplied tariff snapshot records 0% under 5404 19 00 90, with no trade remedy. The filament must meet heading 5404's dimensional and linear-density limits.

Is thick PEEK filament covered by heading 5404?

Monofilament with any cross-sectional dimension above 1 mm falls outside heading 5404. Confirm classification from the measured dimensions and product description.

What should I put in a PEEK monofilament specification?

Specify resin grade, additives, diameter tolerance, ovality, strength, elongation, spool format and joins. Agree performance tests for your operating temperature, chemicals and cleaning process.

Can I use PEEK monofilament in food-contact equipment?

Request food-contact evidence for the exact polymer and colourants. New additives in plastic food-contact materials cannot be marketed until authorisation is complete. Check suitability for your intended conditions.
