Zero duty and the monofilament boundary

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 7 November 2026, polyester monofilament within heading 5404 carries 0% duty from China. The supplied record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls for the relevant lines. This monofilament heading covers linear density of 67 decitex or more, with no cross-sectional dimension exceeding 1 mm.

Ordinary polyester monofilament falls within 5404 19 00 90. The table repeats that code for different applications, rather than separate tariff lines. Code 5404 19 00 60 covers chemically tapered polyester filaments for paintbrush manufacture, with diameter from 0,1 mm to 0,6 mm and length from 30 mm to 120 mm. These cut brush filaments are distinct from continuous yarn.

Confirm the commodity code using composition, linear density, cross-sectional dimensions and supplied form. Finer filament yarn and monofilament exceeding the cross-sectional limit fall outside this monofilament scope. See the wider synthetic monofilament guide for neighbouring products.

Specify polyester yarn for the production process

Specify polyester composition, virgin or recycled feedstock, diameter and tolerance, linear density, breaking strength, elongation, colour and surface finish. Agree the test method and sampling approach for each property. For filter fabrics and netting, trial the yarn on your own machinery before approving the production sample.

Define spool dimensions, winding direction, net yarn weight, acceptable joins and packaging that protects spool edges. For brush applications, specify stiffness and recovery; for outdoor netting, specify the performance you expect after exposure. Keep approved samples for comparison with repeat batches.

For yarn sold as a retail textile product in Great Britain, the label must show fibre content. Check that the polyester description agrees with the supplied material.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 12 tonnes of polyester monofilament yarn on spools, illustrative only under 5404 19 00 90, invoiced at £42,000 free on board, with £1,800 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £43,800. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £43,800, so it is £8,760. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Diameter: measure along sampled spools, check ovality and compare results with the agreed tolerance.

Strength: test breaking strength and elongation, and check knot strength where the intended netting process needs it.

Surface and colour: inspect for scratches, rough patches and contamination; compare colour with the retained sample.

Winding: check net yarn weight, joins, spool damage and smooth unwinding on your machine. Record batch identity using the quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong

Diameter drift changes mesh consistency and brush feel. Poor drawing or an unapproved feedstock change can reduce strength; surface damage can create weak points. Uneven winding, buried joins and damaged spool edges interrupt production even when a short sample performs well.

Do not approve a batch from appearance alone. Compare measured results with the agreed specification and run an arrival sample through your process. Keep affected spools and batch records separate while the supplier investigates.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on polyester monofilament yarn from China?

The relevant lines carry 0% duty in the supplied tariff record dated 7 November 2026, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Is all polyester yarn classified under heading 5404?

No. This monofilament scope requires at least 67 decitex and no cross-sectional dimension exceeding 1 mm. Check construction, dimensions and supplied form before choosing the code.

What should I test on polyester monofilament samples?

Check diameter, ovality, breaking strength, elongation, surface condition and unwinding. Trial the yarn on the machinery and process that will use it.

Can paintbrush filaments use the same code as continuous yarn?

Chemically tapered polyester paintbrush filaments have code 5404 19 00 60 when they meet its stated dimensions and use. Ordinary polyester monofilament is covered by 5404 19 00 90.
