Sourcing petrol snowblower engines from China
Petrol snowblower engines from China carry standard UK duty of 2% to 4% under heading 8407. Specified manufacturing engines may qualify for 0% under authorised use. Confirm with the approval authority which engine type-approval and marking requirements apply to new snowblowers sold in Great Britain. Cambridge China Bridge sources petrol snowblower engines.

Standard duty and conditional manufacturing relief
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8407 covers spark-ignition reciprocating or rotary internal combustion piston engines. This guide concerns separately supplied petrol snowblower engines. The selected other-engine lines carry standard duty of 2% for cylinder capacity not exceeding 250 cm³ and 4% above that capacity.
The supplied tariff record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no attached import controls for these rows. Codes 8407 90 80 10 and 8407 90 90 10 have 0% suspensions under authorised use for specified manufacturing engines with cylinder capacity of at least 300 cm³ and power from 6 to 20 kW, split at 10 kW. Authorised use requires authorisation; ask your broker to check the full description and suspension conditions before claiming relief.
Confirm the commodity code using cylinder capacity, power, intended application and whether the engines are for manufacturing or replacement stock. A manufacturing suspension should not be assumed for replacement engines. For the wider engine family, see petrol lawnmower engines.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Other snowblower engines, cylinder capacity not exceeding 250 cm³ | 8407 90 10 90 | 2% | None |
| Specified snowblower manufacturing engines, at least 300 cm³, 6 to 10 kW | 8407 90 80 10 | 4% | None |
| Other snowblower engines, over 250 cm³, power not exceeding 10 kW | 8407 90 80 90 | 4% | None |
| Specified snowblower manufacturing engines, at least 300 cm³, over 10 to 20 kW | 8407 90 90 10 | 4% | None |
| Other snowblower engines, over 250 cm³, power exceeding 10 kW | 8407 90 90 90 | 4% | None |
Specify cold starting and the snowblower interface
Specify cylinder capacity, rated power and torque at the operating speed, crankshaft orientation, rotation direction, shaft diameter and length, keyway, retaining thread and mounting-hole pattern. Provide the snowblower mounting and pulley drawings. Agree recoil or electric starting, starter supply, charging output, stop-switch connections, fuel controls and the exhaust position.
Agree a cold-start test at your intended operating temperature, with the fuel, oil, conditioning and starting procedure recorded. Check governor response under changing load and access to the choke and primer with gloves. Request an English service manual and a parts list covering the carburettor, starter, ignition components and gaskets.
Confirm with the approval authority which engine type-approval and marking requirements apply to new non-road mobile machinery sold in Great Britain. Type approval demonstrates compliance with the latest emissions standards. Match the approval documents to the actual engine before ordering. If supplied as partly completed machinery, it should come with assembly instructions and a declaration of incorporation. Our testing and certification service can help review the documents.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 40 petrol snowblower engines, cylinder capacity not exceeding 250 cm³ under 8407 90 10 90, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 2% is £184. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,384, so it is £1,876.80. Import taxes total £2,060.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £184 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity: match the engine model, approval marking and supplied documents; compare the carburettor, ignition and exhaust configuration with the approved sample.
Fit: measure the shaft, keyway, retaining thread and mounting pattern against the drawing; trial-fit the intended pulley and check exhaust clearance.
Operation: witness cold starting and loaded running; check governor hunting, stalling, restart behaviour, stop-switch operation and fuel or oil leaks.
Arrival: inspect for bent shafts, cracked housings, corrosion and damaged controls; reconcile accessories and documents with the packing list. Plan shipment checks using our quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong
A general-purpose engine can fit the mounting plate yet have the wrong shaft length, keyway or rotation direction. A warm workshop demonstration does not establish cold-start performance. Poor choke access, an unsuitable carburettor arrangement or unstable governor response can make an otherwise running engine unsuitable for the snowblower.
Documents for a different engine configuration leave an approval question unresolved. Check substitutions before accepting the shipment. Keep the emission-approval review separate from dimensional and running checks, and have your broker confirm whether any claimed manufacturing relief applies to the actual order.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on petrol snowblower engines from China?
The selected lines carry standard duty of 2% or 4%. Specified manufacturing engines under 8407 90 80 10 and 8407 90 90 10 may qualify for 0% under authorised use. No anti-dumping or countervailing duty is listed.
Do petrol snowblower engines need emission approval?
Check that the documents cover the engine configuration you are buying.
Can I claim zero duty on replacement snowblower engines?
Do not assume so. The listed suspensions concern specified manufacturing uses under authorised use. Ask your broker to check the engine specification, intended use and authorisation.
What should I test before ordering snowblower engines?
Trial-fit the shaft and pulley, verify mounting and exhaust clearance, and witness cold starting and loaded running. Check governor stability, stopping, restarting and leaks.
