Sourcing petrol lawnmower engines from China

Petrol lawnmower engines from China normally attract 2% to 4% UK duty; qualifying manufacturing imports can receive 0% under authorised use. Confirm emission type approval and marking requirements for engines for new non-road machinery with the Vehicle Certification Agency. Check shaft fit and approval before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources petrol lawnmower engines.

Duty on standalone lawnmower engines

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8407 covers spark-ignition reciprocating or rotary internal combustion piston engines. This guide concerns standalone petrol lawnmower engines, rather than complete mowers. For other applications, see the wider petrol engine guide.

The selected small-engine lines carry 2% duty from China, while the selected larger-engine lines carry 4%. No anti-dumping or countervailing duties or attached import controls appear on these lines. The manufacturing lines 8407 90 10 10, 8407 90 80 10 and 8407 90 90 10 have a 0% authorised-use suspension subject to customs supervision. Do not assume a replacement engine qualifies for manufacturing relief.

Specify displacement, rated power and intended use before confirming the commodity code. The larger manufacturing lines split at 10 kW, despite sharing a description referring to 6 to 20 kW. For authorised use, confirm with HMRC or your customs broker the authorisation requirements and whether the engines' intended manufacturing use qualifies.

UK duty on these lines for goods of Chinese origin (one code per row), read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026.

Shaft fit, mower compatibility and approval

Give the factory a drawing showing shaft orientation, diameter, usable length, keyway, end thread and mounting-hole pattern. Specify rotation direction, governor setting, torque under mowing load, recoil or electric starting, and the throttle and stop-control interfaces. Match the engine to the intended mower deck or drive system.

Confirm with the Vehicle Certification Agency the emission type approval and engine marking requirements for the intended non-road mobile machinery application. Obtain any applicable certificate covering the exact engine family before ordering, then compare it with the sample label. Agree the carburettor, fuel hoses, air filter, exhaust arrangement, spare parts and English installation and service instructions.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative shipment of 1,000 small petrol lawnmower replacement engines under 8407 90 10 90, invoiced at £90,000 free on board, with £5,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £95,000. Duty at 2% is £1,900. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £96,900, so it is £19,380. Import taxes total £21,280; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,900 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match the engine family, approval marking and serial identification to the supplied documents and approved sample.

Fit: measure the output shaft, keyway, end thread and mounting holes against the drawing; trial-fit the blade adaptor or drive coupling.

Running: check starting, idle stability, governor response and loaded operation on a suitable test bench; record power and torque against the agreed specification.

Arrival condition: inspect for bent shafts, damaged recoil housings, loose controls, corrosion and oil seepage; compare packing and supplied spares with the order. Use an agreed inspection brief.

What goes wrong

An engine can bolt onto the deck yet have the wrong shaft length, keyway or rotation direction. A nominal power claim can also hide poor torque under mowing load. Approve a sample in the intended installation and keep the drawing and loaded-test acceptance criteria with the purchase order.

Approval documents may cover a different engine family from the delivered units. Other faults include unstable governing, difficult restarting, broken recoil components and oil seepage from castings. Check the actual labels and running behaviour before accepting the shipment, rather than relying on catalogue photographs.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For machinery and equipment, see machinery imports.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on petrol lawnmower engines from China?

The selected engine lines carry 2% to 4%. Qualifying manufacturing lines have a 0% authorised-use suspension, subject to customs supervision and the specified use.

Can replacement lawnmower engines use the manufacturing duty suspension?

Do not assume so. The suspension concerns specified manufacturing uses. Confirm with HMRC or your customs broker the authorised-use authorisation requirements, intended use and tariff line before declaring relief.

Do petrol lawnmower engines need emission approval?

Confirm with the Vehicle Certification Agency the emission type approval and marking requirements for the intended non-road mobile machinery application. Ask for any applicable certificate covering the exact engine family and check the delivered labels.

What should I check before buying a replacement mower engine?

Check shaft orientation, dimensions, keyway, end thread, mounting holes, rotation direction and control connections. Trial-fit a sample and test starting and governor response under load.
