Sourcing petrol outboard engines from China
Petrol outboard engines from China pay 4% to 6% UK duty, depending on cylinder capacity and power. Engines for recreational boats must meet the recreational-craft essential requirements before sale in Great Britain, with English instructions and safety information. Cambridge China Bridge sources petrol outboard engines.

Outboard duty depends on capacity and power
Heading 8407 covers spark-ignition piston engines. Petrol outboards have dedicated lines within its marine propulsion branch. The table lists the outboard lines and an other-marine-engine comparison line; that comparison code is not an outboard code.
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, petrol outboards not exceeding 325 cm³ carried 6% duty on goods from China. Above that capacity, both power bands carried 4%, divided at 30 kW. The selected marine lines show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control. This tariff position does not replace product conformity checks.
Confirm the commodity code using the engine's cylinder capacity, rated power and outboard configuration. For another product family within this heading, see petrol motorcycle engines.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Petrol outboards with cylinder capacity not exceeding 325 cm³ | 8407 21 10 00 | 6% | None |
| Petrol outboards over 325 cm³, with power not exceeding 30 kW | 8407 21 91 00 | 4% | None |
| Petrol outboards over 325 cm³, with power exceeding 30 kW | 8407 21 99 00 | 4% | None |
| Other petrol marine propulsion engines, for comparison only | 8407 29 00 00 | 4% | None |
Specify the engine and its fit to the boat
Specify cylinder capacity, rated power and the speed at which it is measured, shaft length, engine weight, transom mounting, tiller or remote control, starting method and trim arrangement. Agree the propeller, fuel tank, fuel connectors and control cables included. Match the mounting and shaft to the intended boat before approving the sample.
For engines intended for recreational boats, the recreational-craft rules include essential requirements that must be met before sale in Great Britain. Ask for the model's conformity declaration, technical documentation and exhaust-emission and noise assessment evidence. Importers must ensure English instructions and safety information accompany the product. Agree access to impellers, seals, ignition parts and illustrated servicing information before ordering.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: 40 portable petrol outboard engines for a marine retailer, illustrative only under 8407 21 10 00, invoiced at £28,000 free on board, with £4,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £32,000. Duty at 6% is £1,920. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £33,920, so it is £6,784. Import taxes total £8,704; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,920 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity and documents: match the model and serial identification to the packing list and conformity documents. Check that the English instructions describe the supplied controls, starting procedure and maintenance.
Mounting and accessories: measure shaft length and check clamps, mounting bolts, steering movement, tilt locking and propeller condition. Count the agreed tank, hoses, connectors and cables.
Running test: use a suitable test tank or test rig following the manufacturer's instructions. Check starting, idle, cooling-water flow, gear selection, throttle response and stop switch. Record fuel, oil or gearbox leaks.
Arrival condition: inspect the cowling, skeg, propeller shaft, connectors and packaging for damage or corrosion. Compare received units with the approved sample and retain photographs. Plan the checks through quality inspection.

What goes wrong
A familiar-looking cowling can conceal a different engine configuration. Documents for another model leave the supplied engine's conformity unverified. Treat a mismatch as unresolved and obtain evidence for the actual product through testing and certification.
A wrong shaft length or incompatible controls can prevent installation even when the engine runs. Cooling faults, leaking fuel connectors, stiff gear selection and damaged propellers are useful rejection checks. Write acceptance criteria into the order and agree how replacement parts will be identified.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on petrol outboards from China?
The supplied tariff data shows 6% for outboards not exceeding 325 cm³ and 4% above that capacity. Above 325 cm³, the code also depends on whether power exceeds 30 kW.
What documents should I request for a Chinese petrol outboard?
Request the exact model's conformity declaration, technical documentation and exhaust-emission and noise assessment evidence. Match the documents to the supplied engine configuration.
Do petrol outboards need English instructions?
Yes. For products covered by the recreational-craft rules, importers placing them on the Great Britain market must ensure they are accompanied by English instructions and safety information.
What should I check when the outboards arrive?
Check model identity, shaft length, mounting, controls and included accessories. Inspect transport damage, then test starting, cooling-water flow, gear selection, stopping and leaks using a suitable test setup.
