Sourcing petrol motorcycle engines from China

Petrol motorcycle engines from China carry standard UK duty of 2% to 4% under heading 8407, depending on capacity and the tariff description. Businesses must not sell consumer products they know, or should know, are unsafe. Check fitment and running performance before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources petrol motorcycle engines.

Standard duty of 2% to 4%

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8407 covers spark-ignition reciprocating or rotary internal combustion piston engines. This guide selects reciprocating petrol engines for motorcycles. The vehicle-engine lines distinguish cylinder capacity, with further descriptions for larger new engines and used engines. For the wider heading, see petrol engines and outboard motors.

The selected lines carry standard duty of 2% up to 1000 cm³ and 4% above that capacity for goods from China. The supplied data records no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no attached import controls on these lines. It lists 0% suspensions on 8407 33 80 90, 8407 34 30 00 and 8407 34 91 90 for narrowly described remanufacturing or hybrid manufacture. Some footnotes are inconsistent or incomplete; ask your broker to verify the full conditions before claiming relief.

Confirm the commodity code using the actual displacement, condition and intended application. Some larger motorcycle engines have dedicated descriptions with detailed construction, dimension and power conditions. A general description in this table does not establish that your engine belongs in an other category. Give your broker the specification and drawings before shipment.

Specify the engine and its motorcycle fitment

Identify the motorcycle model and engine variant, actual displacement, cylinder layout, cooling arrangement, fuel system and ignition system. Agree mounting locations, output shaft or sprocket position, intake and exhaust connections, wiring connectors and sensor compatibility. Request drawings and test a sample installation rather than relying on a claim that the engine fits a familiar motorcycle.

List the gearbox, clutch, starter, charging components, electronic controller, wiring loom, throttle body or carburettor and cooling components included. Agree the power test conditions, installation instructions, service information and replacement parts. Record whether engines are new, rebuilt or used, and match the engine identifiers to the order documents.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 40 replacement petrol motorcycle engines; illustrative order, FOB value and freight under 8407 32 10 00, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 2% is £184. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,384, so it is £1,876.80. Import taxes total £2,060.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £184 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: compare engine markings, displacement, condition and included components with the approved sample and packing list.

Fitment: check mounting holes, shaft or sprocket alignment, intake and exhaust clearances, connectors and cooling connections against the agreed drawings.

Running test: witness cold starting, warm restarting and operation under the agreed load; record output and check oil pressure, temperature, smoke, noise and leaks.

Arrival: inspect crates and restraints, cracked mounting lugs, corrosion, damaged threads and capped openings before installation. Compare findings with the dispatch record; use the quality inspection guide to plan the checks.

What goes wrong

A similar-looking engine can have different mounting centres, sprocket alignment or controller wiring. Missing sensors, an incompatible ignition system, casting defects and leaks can turn a replacement into an installation project. Require written agreement before component substitutions and keep the approved sample specification with the inspection record.

Businesses selling consumer products must not sell goods they know, or should know, are unsafe. Kit-built vehicles require type approval, so plan approval for the completed motorcycle when buying engines for a new build. Confirm with DVLA what evidence or written confirmation is needed for changes to engine number or cylinder capacity. Ask for an invoice showing the engine identifier and actual displacement.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on petrol motorcycle engines from China?

The selected lines carry standard duty of 2% up to 1000 cm³ and 4% above that capacity. Some lines list restricted suspensions; confirm eligibility with your broker before using a reduced rate.

How do I check that a Chinese engine will fit my motorcycle?

Compare mounting drawings, output alignment, intake and exhaust connections, wiring and cooling arrangements. Test a sample installation with the intended gearbox, controller and accessories.

Does buying an engine make a kit-built motorcycle road legal?

Plan approval for the completed motorcycle. GOV.UK states that all kit-built vehicles have to get type approval. Agree the build and approval route before ordering the engine.

What paperwork should I request for a replacement engine?

Request an invoice with the engine identifier and displacement, plus installation and service information. Confirm with DVLA what evidence or written confirmation is needed when engine number or cylinder capacity changes.
