Sourcing Wankel rotary engines from China
Selected Wankel rotary engine lines from China carry 2% to 4% UK duty, with conditional suspensions for specifically described goods. For new non-road mobile machinery sold in Great Britain, confirm the applicable engine type-approval and marking requirements with the relevant authority. Match the engine to its intended use before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources Wankel rotary engines.

Duty depends on capacity, power and use
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8407 covers spark-ignition reciprocating or rotary internal combustion piston engines. This guide concerns Wankel rotary engines. The selected other-engine lines carry 2% or 4% duty on goods from China. Aircraft and marine applications have separate branches; see the wider petrol engines and outboard motors guide.
The supplied tariff record shows no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no attached import controls. The selected table rows have no suspensions. Separately, 8407 90 80 10 and 8407 90 90 10 list 0% suspensions under authorised use for specifically described mower and snow-clearing engine manufacture. These are not general rotary-engine exemptions. Goods declared under authorised use remain under customs supervision until the procedure is discharged.
Give your broker the rotary design, capacity calculation, rated power, intended application and supplied configuration. The vehicle-propulsion branch labelled reciprocating piston engines should not be selected simply because a Wankel engine will power a vehicle. Confirm the commodity code before shipment and use the import duty and VAT guide when budgeting.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Other rotary engines, capacity not exceeding 250 cm³ | 8407 90 10 90 | 2% | None |
| Rotary engines over 250 cm³ for specified industrial vehicle assembly | 8407 90 50 00 | 2% | None |
| Other rotary engines over 250 cm³, power not exceeding 10 kW | 8407 90 80 90 | 4% | None |
| Other rotary engines over 250 cm³, power exceeding 10 kW | 8407 90 90 90 | 4% | None |
Specify the rotor, lubrication and installation
Specify rotor count, chamber capacity and how it is calculated, rated shaft power and speed, continuous operating duty, fuel, cooling method and oil-metering arrangement. Agree output-shaft dimensions, mounting points, exhaust connections, ignition equipment, controller, wiring and which accessories are included. Request drawings and English installation and service instructions.
For installation in new non-road mobile machinery sold in Great Britain, require the relevant engine type-approval evidence and matching approval markings. Type approval demonstrates compliance with the latest emissions standards. Agree whether the engine is supplied as partly completed machinery and request assembly instructions and a declaration of incorporation where appropriate. Machinery placed on the Great Britain market or put into service must be safe.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 4 compact Wankel rotary engines for workshop development under 8407 90 10 90, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 2% is £184. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,384, so it is £1,876.80. Import taxes total £2,060.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £184 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Identity: match engine serial numbers, rotor configuration, controller and approval markings to the agreed specification and documents.
Sealing: obtain rotary compression results with the test method and cranking speed recorded; examine accessible housing surfaces and ask for apex, side and corner seal inspection records.
Running: witness cold starting, hot restarting and a loaded bench run; record shaft power, speed, cooling behaviour and oil delivery, then check for fuel, oil and coolant leaks.
Arrival: check mounts, shaft protection, connectors, corrosion and transit damage against dispatch photographs. Account for loose accessories and manuals using the quality inspection guide.

What goes wrong
Weak rotor sealing can appear as difficult hot starting or uneven compression. Poor housing finish, damaged apex seals, inadequate oil delivery and insufficient cooling can undermine durability. A brief unloaded demonstration does not establish continuous output. Agree the compression method, loaded test conditions and acceptance criteria before production.
A replacement controller or changed oil-metering system can leave the delivered engine different from the tested sample. Approval documents for another engine family also leave an unresolved compliance question. Freeze the configuration, require written approval for substitutions and use testing and certification support to review the evidence before ordering.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on Wankel engines from China?
The selected other-engine lines carry 2% or 4%. Specifically described mower and snow-clearing engines have conditional 0% authorised-use suspensions. Aircraft and marine applications use separate tariff branches.
Does a Wankel engine need emissions type approval?
For use in new non-road mobile machinery sold in Great Britain, confirm the applicable engine type-approval and marking requirements with the relevant authority. Establish the intended application and match the approval evidence to the supplied engine.
How should I check a Wankel engine before shipment?
Agree a rotary compression test with recorded cranking speed, witness cold and hot starts and a loaded bench run, and check oil delivery, cooling and leaks. Match the tested configuration to the shipment.
Can I use a normal petrol car engine commodity code?
Do not choose a reciprocating-piston vehicle code solely from the intended vehicle use. Give your broker the rotary design, capacity calculation, power and application so the correct branch can be confirmed.
