Sourcing petrol chainsaw engines from China

Petrol chainsaw engines within the selected tariff lines carry 2% UK duty from China, with no variation between those lines. Confirm with the relevant authority whether engine type approval and approval markings are required for the intended use in Great Britain. Check the supplied configuration and approval documents. Cambridge China Bridge sources petrol chainsaw engines.

2% duty on the selected engine lines

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8407 covers spark-ignition reciprocating or rotary internal combustion piston engines. This guide concerns separately supplied petrol chainsaw engines, rather than complete chainsaws. The table repeats the ordinary engine code for different supply configurations; confirm classification against what actually ships.

The selected lines carry 2% duty on goods from China, with no recorded anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control. The garden power-unit line applies only when every listed specification and intended-use condition is met. A supplier's description of an engine as suitable for garden machinery is insufficient to select that line.

Confirm the commodity code using the displacement, intended application, drawings and included components. For related engines within the wider heading, see petrol brushcutter engines.

UK duty on these lines for goods of Chinese origin (one code per row), read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026.

Specify the engine and its chainsaw interfaces

Specify displacement, operating cycle, rated power and its test speed, cooling arrangement, fuel and lubrication instructions, carburettor, ignition module and recoil starter. State whether the engine includes the clutch, flywheel, exhaust, tank and air filter. Supply drawings for mounting points, crankshaft end, clutch connection and oil-pump drive where applicable.

Ask for approval documents covering the supplied engine and compare them with its marking and configuration. Keep the intended use clear, particularly when buying replacement engines.

Where the supplied assembly is partly completed machinery, assembly instructions and a declaration of incorporation must accompany it until incorporation. Ask the supplier to identify the status of the assembly and supply the relevant technical documentation. Use testing and certification support to review the evidence before ordering.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order, not a quotation: 150 petrol chainsaw engines under 8407 90 10 90, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 2% is £184. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,384, so it is £1,876.80. Import taxes total £2,060.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £184 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Fit: measure mounting positions, crankshaft end and clutch interface against the approved drawing; trial-fit a sample to the intended chainsaw housing.

Running: use a suitable guarded test fixture to check cold starting, hot restarting, idle stability and output under the agreed load. Record fuel and lubrication used.

Build: check casting damage, fasteners, fuel connections, gasket leaks, starter engagement and exhaust attachment after running.

Identity and packing: compare engine markings and documents with the ordered configuration. On arrival, check corrosion, impact damage and the included components against the packing list. See quality inspection.

What goes wrong

An engine can fit the mounting holes yet have the wrong crankshaft end, clutch position or oil-pump drive. Substituted carburettors and ignition modules can change starting and running behaviour. Record the approved component list and require agreement before substitutions.

Approval documents for another engine configuration leave the buyer with unresolved compliance evidence. A bench demonstration without the agreed load can also conceal weak output or unstable running. Match documents to the shipment and retain the sample test record before accepting the batch.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For machinery and equipment, see machinery imports.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on petrol chainsaw engines from China?

The selected engine lines carry 2% duty from China. The supplied tariff data records no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control on these lines.

Do petrol chainsaw engines need emissions approval?

Ask for documents covering the engine you intend to fit.

What documents should accompany an engine assembly?

If it is partly completed machinery, assembly instructions and a declaration of incorporation must accompany it until incorporation. Ask the supplier to confirm the assembly's status.

How do I check a replacement chainsaw engine fits?

Compare mounting drawings, crankshaft end, clutch position and oil-pump drive where applicable. Trial-fit a sample and check starting and loaded running before accepting the batch.
