Sourcing passenger-car diesel engines from China

Passenger-car diesel engines from China usually carry 4% UK duty, with 2% for industrial assembly and restricted 0% remanufacturing suspensions. Replacement engines must meet the applicable vehicle smoke-test rules, so confirm the receiving car and engine variant before ordering. Cambridge China Bridge sources passenger-car diesel engines.

Usually 4%, with restricted relief

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8408 covers compression-ignition piston engines. Passenger-car diesel engines for industrial assembly carry 2% duty from China; ordinary vehicle-engine lines carry 4%, split by power. The selected lines show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no attached import controls.

The 0% suspension under 8408 20 55 00 names used engines of 55 to 200 kW for remanufacturing only; 8408 20 57 00 names used engines of 103 to 190 kW for that purpose. Each engine must also fit its code's power band. These are conditional suspensions, not relief for every used or rebuilt engine. The suspension recorded under 8408 20 99 00 describes an electric motor/generator, so do not assume it covers passenger-car diesel engines.

Give your customs broker the engine specification, rated power, condition and intended use before claiming relief or using the industrial-assembly line. Confirm the commodity code. For the wider vehicle-engine context, see diesel truck engines.

Match the engine to the receiving car

Specify the vehicle model, engine identification code, cylinder capacity, rated power, gearbox connection, mounting points, sump layout and controller compatibility. Define whether the supply is a bare engine, an assembled engine without accessories, or a package including injectors, turbocharger, wiring and sensors. State whether it is new, used or remanufactured, and request a serial-numbered test record.

For diesel vehicles first used on or after 1 September 2002, a replacement engine is tested to the vehicle's age-based smoke standards. For earlier vehicles fitted with an older engine, the engine's standards apply and its age must be proved. Ask the installer to confirm the applicable test before purchase.

For UK sale, retain technical documents showing compliance with applicable heavy-metal restrictions and plastic and rubber marking standards for at least four years. Request the relevant material declarations and component information with the engine specification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative: one new passenger-car diesel engine over 100 kW, not exceeding 200 kW under 8408 20 57 00, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 4% is £368. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,568, so it is £1,913.60. Import taxes total £2,281.60; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £368 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match the engine code, serial number, casting identifiers and supplied accessories to the order and test record.

Running condition: witness starting and loaded running; record oil pressure, coolant behaviour, smoke and diagnostic faults against agreed acceptance criteria.

Interfaces: check mounts, gearbox connection, wiring plugs, injectors, turbocharger and controller compatibility with the receiving car.

Arrival: inspect for cracked mounts, damaged connectors, corrosion, fluid leakage and uncapped openings before installation. Use an agreed quality inspection plan.

What goes wrong

A matching engine family name can hide different injectors, sensors, turbochargers or controller software. An engine may bolt into place yet fail to communicate with the car or produce the expected output. Agree the exact variant, included components, test evidence and responsibility for correcting a mismatch before ordering.

Used remanufacturing cores need particular care. In England, a part removed from a depolluted vehicle ceases to be waste when its reuse for the original purpose is certain without further testing or repair. Establish the status of repairable cores with your broker and environmental adviser before shipment; tariff suspension eligibility alone does not establish that status.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on passenger-car diesel engines from China?

Ordinary vehicle-engine lines carry 4%; the industrial-assembly line carries 2%. Restricted used-engine remanufacturing suspensions can give 0%. The selected lines show no anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Are all used passenger-car diesel engines duty-free?

No. The suspensions name particular power ranges and require use for remanufacturing only. Confirm the specification, commodity code and intended use before claiming relief.

Can an older diesel engine be fitted to a newer car?

For vehicles first used on or after 1 September 2002, the replacement engine is tested to the vehicle's age-based smoke standards. Confirm suitability with the installer before buying.

What should I ask the Chinese engine supplier for?

Ask for the exact engine variant, serial number, condition, included accessories, controller compatibility, material documents and an engine-specific running-test record.
