Sourcing marine diesel engines from China

Marine propulsion diesel engines from China carry 0% to 2% UK duty, depending on vessel use, condition and power. For recreational craft engines within scope, check conformity documents and marking before sale in Great Britain. Cambridge China Bridge sources marine diesel engines.

Marine propulsion duty: 0% or 2%

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 20 October 2026, heading 8408 covers compression-ignition piston engines. Its marine propulsion lines distinguish used engines from new engines, with new engines split by power and vessel use. This guide concerns propulsion engines; the wider diesel engines guide covers other applications.

For goods from China, the lines for specified seagoing vessels carry 0% duty and the other marine propulsion lines carry 2%. The supplied marine lines list no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, tariff suspension or import control. Do not assume that any engine described as marine qualifies for the seagoing-vessel line.

Give your customs broker the intended vessel use, engine condition and rated power to confirm the commodity code. The listed seagoing-vessel descriptions refer to headings 8901 to 8906 and specified tug and warship subheadings. See the import duty and VAT guide for the calculation method.

Specify the engine and its marine installation

State the vessel application, continuous or intermittent duty, rated power and speed, rotation, gearbox ratio and coupling, mounting positions and installation envelope. Agree whether the package includes the gearbox, control panel, wiring loom, exhaust elbow, heat exchanger and seawater pump. Obtain drawings showing service access and cooling connections.

For recreational craft engines within scope, check conformity assessment, marking and accompanying documents before sale in Great Britain. Instructions must be in English. For a commercial vessel installation, ask the vessel surveyor to confirm the emissions documentation suitable for the intended vessel and operating area before accepting the engine specification.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: one new marine propulsion diesel engine up to 50 kW, other under 8408 10 27 00, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 2% is £184. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,384, so it is £1,876.80. Import taxes total £2,060.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £184 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match the engine model, serial number and supplied components to the order and test records; inspect these again on arrival.

Running: witness a loaded bench test at the agreed rating; record power, speed, oil pressure and coolant temperature, then check for fuel, oil and coolant leaks.

Installation: measure mounts and coupling faces; check gearbox engagement, cooling connections, exhaust arrangement, wiring and control-panel functions.

Packing and support: check capped openings, corrosion protection, lifting arrangements, transit damage, manuals and spare parts against the packing list. Agree the checks using the inspection guide.

What goes wrong

A bare industrial engine may arrive without the agreed marine cooling or exhaust package. A mismatched gearbox, inaccessible filter or misplaced mounting foot can prevent installation even when the engine runs correctly. Specify the complete package and approve its drawings before production.

A brief unloaded run does not establish performance under propulsion load. Substituted pumps, injectors or controllers can undermine the agreed specification, while saltwater exposure during transport can damage connectors and machined surfaces. Compare the delivered engine with the approved component list and investigate discrepancies before commissioning.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on marine diesel engines from China?

The supplied tariff data shows 0% for marine propulsion engines for specified seagoing vessels and 2% for other marine propulsion engines, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty.

Do marine diesel engines need conformity marking?

For recreational craft engines within scope, check the relevant conformity marking and documents. Confirm the intended vessel application before selecting the compliance route.

Can I use an industrial diesel engine as a marine engine?

Check the complete installation with your marine engineer: cooling, exhaust, gearbox, mounts and controls. Agree the marine package and loaded performance rather than relying on a bare-engine specification.

What should I ask the Chinese factory to test?

Ask for a loaded bench test at the agreed rating, leak checks after running, gearbox and control checks, and records identifying the actual engine supplied.
