Sourcing diesel truck engines from China

Diesel truck engines from China usually carry 4% UK duty, with 2% for qualifying industrial assembly and 0% for specified used engines imported for remanufacturing. New trucks must be approved as complete or completed vehicles before registration. Cambridge China Bridge sources diesel truck engines.

Usually 4%, with narrowly defined exceptions

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8408 covers compression-ignition piston engines. Truck propulsion engines fall within its vehicle-engine branch. The ordinary power-band lines shown carry 4% duty on goods from China. The supplied facts show no anti-dumping or countervailing measures and no attached import controls on these lines. For other applications, see the diesel engines guide.

Conditional 0% suspensions cover specified used engines imported solely for remanufacturing: the note under 8408 20 55 00 specifies 55 to 200 kW, while that under 8408 20 57 00 specifies 103 to 190 kW. The first note extends beyond its line's power band, so ask your broker to reconcile the description and classification before claiming relief. These notes do not offer general relief for new engines or ready-to-fit replacement engines.

The industrial-assembly line 8408 20 10 00 carries 2%; its truck provision specifies cylinder capacity below 2 500 cubic centimetres. The suspension note under 8408 20 99 00 describes an electric motor/generator, so obtain broker confirmation rather than applying it to a diesel engine. Confirm the commodity code using propulsion use, rated power, condition and intended assembly or remanufacturing purpose.

Specify the truck, engine and emissions package

Give the factory the truck model, existing engine identification, gearbox interface, mounting drawings and intended use. State whether you want a bare engine, an assembled engine with accessories, or a used core for remanufacturing. Specify rated power and speed, torque curve, cooling connections, sump position, turbocharger, injectors, wiring, controller calibration and exhaust after-treatment.

All goods vehicles must be approved as complete or completed vehicles before registration. Government guidance identifies Euro VI as the current heavy-duty vehicle emissions standard. For a new truck project, have the vehicle approval adviser confirm the exact engine and after-treatment configuration before ordering. For replacement work, have the installer check compatibility with the existing truck rather than accepting a generic emissions claim.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: one new replacement diesel truck engine under 8408 20 57 00, invoiced at £8,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,200. Duty at 4% is £368. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,568, so it is £1,913.60. Import taxes total £2,281.60; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £368 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match the engine identification, serial marking, condition and supplied accessories to the order and individual test record.

Fit: check mounts, bellhousing, flywheel, sump clearance, pipe connections, wiring connectors and controller compatibility against the agreed drawings.

Running: witness a bench test under load, record output and operating temperatures, check diagnostic faults, and inspect oil, coolant and fuel connections for leaks after running.

Arrival: inspect crate damage, corrosion, blocked openings and missing accessories before installation. Compare the engine with dispatch photographs and retain its test record. Agree these checks in the inspection brief.

What goes wrong

A matching engine family name can conceal different mounts, sumps, injectors or controller settings. An engine may bolt into place but fail to communicate with the truck or work with its exhaust after-treatment. Put the agreed configuration and permitted substitutions in the purchase specification.

Fresh paint can conceal a used engine sold as new, while a short idle demonstration can miss overheating, poor output or leaks under load. Ask for condition records and a test tied to the actual engine. Keep photographs of its identification and obtain installation and service information before shipment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on diesel truck engines from China?

Usually 4%. Qualifying industrial-assembly engines carry 2%, and specified used engines imported solely for remanufacturing have conditional 0% suspensions. Confirm eligibility against the exact tariff line.

Can I fit a Chinese diesel engine to a new truck?

The complete or completed goods vehicle must be approved before registration. Have the vehicle approval adviser confirm the exact engine, calibration and exhaust after-treatment before ordering.

How do I check whether a replacement truck engine fits?

Match the engine identification and drawings, then check mounts, bellhousing, flywheel, sump clearance, cooling connections, wiring, controller calibration and exhaust after-treatment with the installer.

Does a used truck engine automatically qualify for duty relief?

No. The supplied suspension notes specify used engines imported solely for remanufacturing within stated power limits. A ready-to-fit replacement is not automatically eligible; ask your broker to check.
