Duty on motocross goggles

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 9004 covers spectacles, goggles and similar eyewear. Motocross goggles with plastic lenses fall within 9004 90 10 00; the other-material lens line is 9004 90 90 00. Product variants can share a commodity code, as the table shows.

Both lines carry a normal China duty of 2%, with a 0% suspension restricted to protective spectacles and goggles. The supplied tariff facts list no anti-dumping or countervailing measures. Confirm eligibility and the declaration procedure with your customs broker. The tariff also attaches CITES import and export controls. CITES specimens imported into Great Britain need a permit; confirm the requirements for any relevant materials sourced from China with your broker.

Confirm the commodity code using the complete goggles, lens material and protective purpose. Separately imported frames and lenses have their own classifications. See the ski goggles guide for related eyewear within the wider heading.

Specify lenses, helmet fit and protective evidence

Specify the lens material, tint, optical clarity, anti-fog coating, ventilation, lens retention and replacement method. Agree the frame shape, face foam, strap adjustment and helmet models used for fit checks. If ordering tear-off or roll-off accessories, approve their mounting and operation with the goggles.

Confirm with the relevant authority the PPE category and any type-examination requirements under the applicable CE or UKCA route for the impact-protective goggles. Request the certificate and test reports for the exact frame and lens combination. A sunglasses report alone does not establish impact protection. Agree English user information and markings with the approved sample.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative small-business batch of plastic-lensed motocross goggles; confirm suspension eligibility before calculating duty under 9004 90 10 00, invoiced at £2,500 free on board, with £950 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,450. Duty at 2% is £69. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,519, so it is £703.80. Import taxes total £772.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £69 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Lenses: check distortion against a grid, scratches, coating consistency and lens seating; compare each tint with its approved sample and reports.

Fit: check the goggles inside the agreed helmets, including nose clearance, face contact and strap adjustment; look for gaps or pressure points.

Retention and accessories: check lens engagement, strap anchors, buckle grip, foam adhesion and any tear-off or roll-off mechanism during inspection.

Documents and marking: match the supplied model to its certificate, reports and English instructions. Check conformity marking and manufacturer details. The importer must put its name and postal address on the PPE; if this is not possible, confirm the permitted alternative with the relevant authority.

What goes wrong

Look for lenses that lift out of the frame when it flexes, straps that slip on the helmet and foam that separates after handling. Poor helmet fit can leave gaps or press the frame against the nose. Check ventilation and fogging with the agreed sample rather than accepting an anti-fog statement on the carton.

A factory may supply reports for a different lens or frame, or change the coating after sample approval. Compare the shipment with the approved specification and resolve discrepancies before releasing it for sale. Keep replacement lenses and accessories tied to the compatible model.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For components and parts, see sourcing for manufacturers.
