Swimming-goggle codes and UK duty

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 8 October 2026, heading 9004 covers spectacles, goggles and similar eyewear. Swimming goggles with plastic lenses sit within 9004 90 10 00; goggles with lenses of other materials sit within 9004 90 90 00. The table separates buying variants sharing a code. See the wider eyewear guide for sunglasses and safety glasses.

Both relevant lines carry 2% ordinary duty for goods from China. The supplied facts show no anti-dumping or countervailing measure and a 0% autonomous suspension restricted to protective spectacles and goggles. Ask your customs broker to confirm whether the exact swimming-goggle model qualifies before budgeting for relief. Import VAT is 20%; see UK import duty and VAT.

The tariff attaches CITES import and export controls to these lines. If materials include species listed in Annex A or B, CITES permits are required. For your shipment from China, ask the broker to confirm the applicable requirement against the material specification. Confirm the commodity code using lens material, intended use and the goods as imported.

Specify lenses, seals and swimming use

Specify adult or children's fit, surface-swimming use, lens material, clear or tinted lenses, prescription correction where ordered, and any claimed ultraviolet protection or anti-fog coating. Define the seal material, nose-bridge adjustment, strap material and buckle design. Approve a sample with the actual retail box, instructions and lens protection.

Confirm whether the model is supplied as personal protective equipment and ask for the assessment route and documents supporting its protective claims. Most new personal protective equipment placed on the Great Britain market must carry CE or UKCA marking, a declaration of conformity and English instructions. For such equipment, the importer must identify itself by name and postal address on the product, subject to permitted exceptions. Arrange testing and certification around the exact model.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative small-business order of boxed adult swimming goggles, using the ordinary duty without claiming the suspension under 9004 90 10 00, invoiced at £2,500 free on board, with £950 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,450. Duty at 2% is £69. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,519, so it is £703.80. Import taxes total £772.80; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £69 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Lenses: check scratches, distortion against a grid, tint consistency and prescription identification where supplied. Compare coating performance with the approved sample.

Seals: check moulding flash, uneven gasket edges and leakage during an agreed water-use test across the intended fit range.

Straps and bridges: check adjustment, buckle grip and attachment strength when wet. Look for slipping straps, cracked bridges and sharp edges.

Packaging and documents: match the model and protective claims to the supplied reports, declaration and markings where applicable. Check English instructions and importer identification. Include these checks in quality inspection.

What goes wrong

A comfortable dry sample can leak in use because the seal shape does not suit the intended wearer. A tightened strap may hide poor fit during sampling. Anti-fog coatings can deteriorate after cleaning, tinted lenses can vary between batches, and wet buckles can slip. Agree water-use and care trials before approving production.

A report for a different lens, seal or model does not resolve questions about the goods being ordered. Compare report photographs and product descriptions with production samples. Keep replacement materials and coating changes subject to approval, and ask the broker to resolve suspension eligibility before the customs declaration.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For components and parts, see sourcing for manufacturers.
