Ski-goggle codes and conditional duty relief

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 30 September 2026, heading 9004 covers spectacles, goggles and similar eyewear. Ski goggles with plastic lenses fall within 9004 90 10 00; other lens materials fall within 9004 90 90 00. The table shows product variants sharing these codes. Separately imported lenses and frames need their own classification.

Both lines show 2% base duty on goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measure recorded. Each has a 0% suspension restricted to protective spectacles and goggles. Have your broker confirm eligibility and the declaration claim before budgeting for relief. See the wider eyewear guide and confirm the commodity code against the finished product.

The tariff attaches CITES import and export controls. Check the materials for listed species: CITES specimens entering Great Britain require a permit application, and the corresponding exporting-country permit must also be obtained. For any such material from China, confirm the applicable documents and restrictions with your customs broker before ordering.

Specify lenses, ventilation and helmet fit

Specify lens material, tint, light transmission, ultraviolet protection, anti-fog treatment and coating durability. Define whether lenses are fixed or interchangeable, how they lock into the frame, and which replacement lenses fit. Approve each tint separately rather than accepting a report for an unrelated lens.

Agree frame dimensions, facial foam, ventilation openings, strap adjustment and compatibility with your intended helmets. If goggles must fit over prescription spectacles, test that combination on samples. Include cleaning instructions and protective packaging in the approved specification.

For eye-protection goggles, confirm the PPE assessment route against the claimed risks. In-scope PPE needs conformity assessment according to its risk category. Great Britain recognises CE marking indefinitely; check the assessment documents behind the marking. The importer must verify the manufacturer's assessment and provide importer identification and a postal address.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 950 pairs of ski goggles, illustrative order using the base duty before any suspension claim under 9004 90 10 00, invoiced at £9,690 free on board, with £950 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £10,640. Duty at 2% is £212.80. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £10,852.80, so it is £2,170.56. Import taxes total £2,383.36; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £212.80 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Lenses: compare every tint with the approved sample, check distortion against a grid, and match ultraviolet and transmission reports to the supplied lens.

Fogging and coatings: check performance under agreed cold-to-warm conditions, coating adhesion and scratches after the agreed cleaning method.

Fit and retention: check helmet clearance, facial foam contact, strap grip and adjustment, and lens retention during handling and replacement.

Documents and packing: match model identification, conformity marking and declaration to the goods. Check manufacturer details, importer identification and English instructions, then inspect lens protection inside the retail pack at inspection.

What goes wrong

A lens can look like the approved sample while using a different tint or coating. Problems to screen for include fogging between lenses, scratched mirror coatings, optical distortion, foam lifting from the frame and straps slipping on helmets. Replacement lenses may fit loosely even when the original assembly feels secure.

A generic eyewear report may describe a different model or lens. Match the report photographs, materials and protection claims to the order, and investigate any change before accepting the batch. Do not assume that a mark on the strap proves the supplied configuration was assessed.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For components and parts, see sourcing for manufacturers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on ski goggles from China?

The relevant lines show 2% base duty and a conditional 0% suspension for protective spectacles and goggles. No anti-dumping or countervailing measure is recorded. Confirm suspension eligibility with your broker.

Do ski goggles need CE or UKCA marking?

For goggles within PPE scope, confirm the conformity assessment for the protection claimed. Great Britain recognises CE marking indefinitely. Check the assessment evidence, rather than relying on the printed mark.

Can a sunglasses test report cover ski goggles?

Do not assume so. Ask for evidence matching the ski-goggle model, lens variants and intended protection. A report for an unrelated sunglasses frame does not establish performance of the supplied goggles.

What should I check on ski-goggle samples?

Check optical distortion, tint and ultraviolet evidence, fogging, coating durability, helmet fit, foam adhesion, strap grip and interchangeable-lens retention. Approve the instructions and packaging alongside the goggles.
