Metal nameplates and sign plates from China

0% duty

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 26 September 2026, sign-plates, nameplates, address-plates and similar plates, numbers, letters and other symbols of base metal, heading 8310, carried 0% on goods from China, with no anti-dumping measure. Signs with a permanently fixed light source are classified with lighting, and plastic signs have their own code.

Rating plates and marking

Equipment rating plates carry information other rules require, such as the manufacturer, model, electrical rating, serial number and conformity marking, so the artwork has to be checked against those rules for each product before plates are made. Consumer signs must be safe under the General Product Safety Regulations 2005, which for plates means no sharp edges or corners.

Specifying plates

Specify metal and thickness (aluminium, stainless steel, brass), marking method (chemical etching, anodised and printed, laser engraving or stamping), fill colours, size and corner radius, fixing (holes, studs or adhesive backing) and the environment the plate must survive, such as outdoor, heat or chemicals.

Worked duty example

For a made-up shipment of 50,000 etched aluminium equipment nameplates under 8310 00 00 00, add the £800 of freight and insurance to the £12,000 free-on-board price and customs sees £12,800. Duty on metal nameplates is zero, leaving import VAT of £2,560, 20% of the customs value. For a VAT-registered buyer that is a cash-flow cost rather than a lasting one. Inspection checklist

Durability: run neutral salt spray to ISO 9227 on outdoor plates and check print, fill and anodising for fading or lifting, and rub printed or filled areas with a solvent agreed in the order to check the marking does not wipe off.

Adhesive backing: peel-test adhesive-backed plates after applying them to the target surface and leaving them for the agreed time, and check the adhesive type matches the specification for the surface and temperature.

Artwork and finish: check text, logos and serial numbers against the approved artwork on every design, measure size and hole positions, and check edges and corners are deburred.

What goes wrong

Metal plates fail on marking, adhesion and accuracy. Printed or filled text fades or wipes off outdoors, adhesive-backed plates fall off in heat, anodised colour varies between batches, serial numbers are duplicated or out of sequence, and rating plates carry wrong electrical data copied from an old file.
