Signage is several products pretending to be one

A sign or display unit looks like a single item, and in compliance terms it is usually three or four. There is a structure, often a printed or fabricated surface, frequently an electrical element, and sometimes a battery.

Each of those brings its own requirements, and the electrical part is where imported signage most often goes wrong. An illuminated sign is an electrical product with the obligations that follow, and a driver or power supply specified for another market is not a detail you fix on site.

The electrical element, which decides most of the risk

Specify voltage, frequency, driver type and brand, ingress protection rating appropriate to where the unit will live, cable specification and length, connector type and the plug if one is supplied. Outdoor and semi-outdoor units need a genuine weather rating rather than an optimistic one.

LED modules and drivers are the components most often substituted, because they are invisible once the unit is assembled and the saving is real. Name them, require approval for any change, and check the actual build rather than the specification sheet.

Importing electrical equipment brings waste electrical producer obligations, and where there are cells in the unit you are normally a battery producer too. Both are commonly missed on signage because buyers think of it as a fabricated product rather than an electrical one.

Print, colour and the thing clients notice

Colour is what a client will judge, and colour is what varies. Specify against a recognised colour system with a physical approved proof, and require a match to the proof rather than to a screen or a digital file.

Specify substrate, print process, lamination and UV or weather resistance with a stated expected life in the intended environment. A print that fades in eight months outdoors was probably never specified for outdoors.

For anything backlit, approve the proof lit rather than flat. Colours behave differently with light behind them, and a proof approved on a desk is not evidence about the finished sign.

Structure, fixings and installation reality

Specify material and thickness, frame construction, welds and finishes, and the fixing method with the fixings included. Signage failures in service are usually fixing failures or corrosion at a fixing point.

State the wind loading or structural expectation for anything mounted externally or at height, and be clear about who is responsible for confirming it is adequate for the installation. This is a question that gets left ambiguous until it matters.

Specify how it arrives: assembled or flat, with which parts pre-fitted, and with what protection on visible faces. Display units in particular are frequently damaged in transit on the exact surfaces the customer looks at.

Freight, because signage is awkward cargo

Signage and display is bulky, often fragile, and sometimes long, which puts it at the awkward end of freight. Part-container sea freight is charged on volume or weight, whichever is greater, so a bulky low-weight unit pays for space.

Design for the carton where you can: flat-packed frames, nested panels, separately packed acrylic. Ask for carton dimensions and units per carton early and check how they load.

Oversized items may need specialist handling at delivery, which is regularly excluded from a freight quotation and appears as a surprise charge on the day.

Running the order

Establish the installation environment first, because indoor, semi-outdoor and outdoor change nearly every specification decision. Then specify the electrical, the print and the structure as three separate blocks with their own evidence requirements.

Approve a lit, printed, assembled pre-production sample. Inspect before shipment including electrical function, print colour against the approved proof and the condition of visible faces. Then keep the technical documentation, because as importer or own-brand supplier it is yours to hold.
